Morning Routine

Once school is in session, what is your morning routine with the kids and how long does it them to get ready and out the door?

Re: Morning Routine

  • I teach at a school that's an hour away, I have one kid in elementary and one in middle who catches a very early bus to her magnet school.  But somehow, we manage to do it.  Here's how it goes:

5:30 - I get up, shower, get dressed, make lunches, start making breakfast
5:40 - DD gets up, showers,
6:00 - DH and DS get up (DS showers before bed). DS gets dressed, brushes teeth, gets backpack ready, before eating.
6:15 - Everyone's breakfast is made.  We usually have either an egg sandwich or a soft-boiled egg and oatmeal.  Everyone needs a high protein breakfast because we eat so early.
6:40 - Shoes, coats, backpacks on,last minute check for supplies.
6:45 - DS dropped off at babysitter next door
6:50 - DD dropped off at her bus stop at local elementary school, I head to my own school.
7:55 -- DS and babysitter go outside to wait for bus.

There are 3 keys to making this work:  1) Everyone has their own alarm clock and gets up to an alarm. We've done this since kindergarten.  2) Everyone is dressed and ready to go before eating breakfast.  3) No TV.

  • Kids awake at 7-7:15 am Hopefully make beds, get dressed, eat bfast, and brush teeth. They like to play together for 10 mins before school (no electronics). We leave at 8:10 to drive to school, which is a 2 min drive ; )

Bags, lunches, and clothing picked out the night before.

  • I wake the kids up about 1.5 hrs before they are due at the bus. Depending on whether I have to be out the door for something, I will usually get up about 30 min to an hour before them. They eat, get dressed & DD#1 does her piano practice.  We always have extra time in the mornings, so I will usually have them read.  I hate running out the door to catch the bus, so I really try to have lunches done the night before & keep mornings calm.  Def. no TV.  There is no way I could tear them away to get stuff done!!

6:50 am: Everybody gets dressed and I do my hair (DH has already left for work)

7:00 am: Play time or TV time

7:15 am: DS puts his socks and shoes on

7:25 am: Out the door (private school, I drive him to school)

7:35 Arrive at school, 15 minute grace period at school, students allowed to enter the classroom at 7:45 am, class starts at 8 am.

7:35 am: I head to work

Clothes are picked out in advance for the entire week and his school's cafeteria serves homemade nutritious food, so no lunch packing required.

  • I will get up at 630 and shower. I will get DS up at 715 and we need to be out the door at 745. He will get himself dressed and we eat breakfast together. The school is right across the street from our house and I take him in for early morning care, since his school doesn't start til 9. I work in a neighboring district and have ab 830 start time. His clothes are picked out the night before and I also pack our lunches the night before. I'm a single mom so it's all on me. This works well for us though!

  • DS needs about an hour. He's supposed to get dressed as soon as he gets up. Eats breakfast, brushes teeth, puts on socks. Depending on how motivated he is, he sometimes had time to play in his room a bit. We don't allow TV in the morning because he gets too distracted.

  • DS needs 10 minutes to wake up before he is ready to be up and moving. DD gets up right away. I wake them up at 6:30. They both get dressed and brush their teeth. Them I fix their hair. We are downstairs by 6:50ish for breakfast. I pack their lunch while they eat breakfast. H takes the, to school and they leave at 7:15.
If I am taking them to school, I get up at 6 to shower and get myself ready.

  • Last year, we had more time since DS didn't start school until 9:15. We'd leave the house around 8:50 to drive to school. This year, DS's start time is 8:40 and we need to leave by 8:20 to walk to school...weather permitting.

The kids wake up between 6:30 and 7a. They can watch a show or play until 7:15 and then have breakfast. I'll be having breakfast and packing DS's lunch during this time. At 7:45 we'll brush teeth and get dressed. At 8:10, final potty chance and shoes on, then out the door.
