Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

At 18 months

My babe drinks everything out of sippy cups.  What's after sippy cups?
She loves to drink out of a kiddie cup, but without any help, she pours herself the entire beverage on herself.

What's after banana toothbrush? She's been tooth-pulling and destroying it, so I bought a MAM's toothbrush (looks like a regular brush, but smaller), but she's destroying this too!

Re: At 18 months

  • Regular cups. It takes some practice for them to use them well without spilling. We usually start by filling a small plastic cup about halfway with water and letting them sit at the table and practice.

A regular toothbrush, too. They have small toddler/child size brushes in the toothbrush aisle.

  • How long did it take your child to use a reg cup without any help?

A regular toothbrush makes my child scream and arch her back til she's on the ground. :(
  • My older child is 3 and she still uses sippy cups, we use ones that are "drinking cups" so its more like drinking out of a real cup.  At daycare they start having them practice using tiny regular cups at 2.5.  At 18months I would not be worried about switching from sippy cups.

  • I would just continue to use sippy cups for a long while. Why rush to a regular cup?

Tooth brushing- we use a small regular brush. I let DS have a turn to "brush his own teeth" (aka chew on it) and then it's my turn to actually do it. He hates it and screams and I have to pin him down to do it, but keeping his teeth healthy is very important.

  • Our daughter is 18 months and we have started teaching her how to drink out of a cup, since she seems interested. When reasonable (when she's in the bath, when she's done eating dinner and about to take a bath, when she's outside) we give her a cup about 1/4 full of water in it and let her go to town. She gets better by slow steps. Otherwise, she's using a variety of different sippy cups (straw sippies, silicone sippies, etc).
As for tooth brushing, she has always used a small soft bristled brush. The first week or two were a pain in the keester, with hubby having to basically hold her down while I brushed, but now she sits happily for it as long as we sing "The Tooth Brush Song" Which is just a ditty we make up as we go along, usually to the tune of "This is your birthday song" and it always starts
    This is your toothbrush song
    It isn't very long
It's when we brush your teeth
An get them clean and neat
At first we brush the top
    And then the bottom too
    (make stuff up)
This is the tooth brush song
    It isn't very long
    And now it's done!

It's silly, but it works for us.
