Toddler weight percentiles

So we had DD 15 month check up today and she is in the 97th percentile for weight (or 27.5 lbs). She is tall too 90th percentile. My question is has anyone had a child that high on the chart level out? I know I am crazy and she is only 15 months old, but people are starting to make comments and it is starting to make me feel judged. I know she is healthy and happy and eats healthy so I should stop worrying.

Sorry if this doesn't make much sense.

Re: Toddler weight percentiles

  • She started out 50th. Her pedi said he will get concerned if it doesn't level off. He told me not to worry. I know I need to listen to him but random people ie strangers make comments about her weight and I feel bad for my DD.

Thanks for the reminder that it isn't bad to be 97th.

  • She started walking at the beginning of June and just started moving quickly toddler running I guess you would call it this week.
  • I bet she will even out by the next visit.

Are you or your husband (or other close family) tall?

Do you have diabetes or obesity in your family history?

And hey, someone has to be at the top of the charts after all

  • My ds was like this. He was a bit shorter then average but top of the charts for weight and head size. He use to look like a bowling ball. Walking makes all the difference, that and being over a year old. Ds is now just over 2 and he is 50th percentile for everything now. I wouldnt worry about it till she is at least 2 or 3. It will probably balance out. I am guessing she is eating well and happy?

Oh and just as a sidenote, I was a chubby baby and preschooler and am now average height and weight, and  dh was average as a baby and toddler and since hitting ,m iddle school has a.ways had problems with his weight. So  so the percentiles now should just be taking with a grain of salt as long as she is healthy.

  • She seems proportioned though, because she's also very tall.
  • Since her weight is proportionate with her height I wouldn't be concerned. If she were 97th for weight but 5th for height, then you might be concerned. My son was always high for height and weight and at 3.5 he's borderline underweight. He thinned out really quick after he gained mobility.

  • I wouldn't worry about it. This is a case of babies do what babies do. I'd be more worried if they weren't proportionate but it seems like they are.

I have a couple nephews were born at the top of the chart and were over the chart at age 2 (with two perfectly avg. all around parents) They're now 4 and 2 and right back on average. It all levels eventually.

And if it makes you feel better, my own kid is 50% all around and people make comments all the time about how "solid" she is or how "tall" she is or they even tell me she's "chubby." And then the next person says, "Does she eat good? I think she needs more!"

LOL. I can't win either way. She's entirely normal people!

  • I am 5'3" and 110 pounds. My DH is 5'11" and about 170. We both have family members that are overweight/obese. She eats small portions of healthy foods. I think it is probably the family history that is in the back of my mind.

Thank you for the responses. Hopefully now that she is mobile and loves being outside that it will level off.

  • I see nothing to be concerned about.  Don't let comments get to you.  If your kid was suddenly in 90th percentile for weight and really low for height that would be something to keep an eye on.  Your baby is completely proportionate and if they haven't been on the upper side of the chart in the past it's probably just a growth spurt or something.  Early growth isn't exactly an indication of where they'll end up (meaning, for example, just because your baby is a tall toddler doesn't mean they'll end up a really tall adult).  I really really wouldn't worry about it or your baby getting exercise.  I think you're looking at this entirely wrong.  She's totally normal.
  • @Stefibeth thank you! I appreciate the feedback. I guess I just needed reassurance that she is ok and totally normal. I know it logically, but my emotional side just needed it reaffirmed.

    Thanks everyone!

You mention having family members who are obese--why? Is it because they have medical conditions that cause obesity or is it because of poor food choices/limited exercise? If its the latter I wouldn't be concerned that your child will be overweight because she's going to learn most by watching the people she lives with everyday.

  • @KC_13 I don't know of any medical conditions and some are definitely due to lifestyle choices. Thanks for that reminder!

Totally understand.  We all worry about our kids!
  • My DS is on the opposite end of the spectrum.  He hangs out in the 3rd percentile and has since birth.  My DD seems to be following the same path.  I get the other side of the comments.  There is really no winning.  People think chunky babies are healthy, but they better not get too chunky...  I would listen to your pediatrician.  As mine said, somebody has to make up the lower and upper ends of the scale. As long as your LO is eating a healthy diet and is active, I wouldn't worry about it.  It will also even out once she starts moving more.

  • if you're only concerned about a perfectly proportional child b/c other people make comments, be assured that if she was 3 points from the bottom you'd hear comments as well. believe me we were there.

continue to offer healthy foods, let her be active and play, think of a snappy comeback for the worst of the bigmouths, and try to ignore the rest. i wish i had one for you!
