Ergo users - I need some help!

My LO is 8.5 months old, and roughly 18lbs.  We've been using the ergo since day one and we love it.  However...

Does anyone successfully use the side-carry position?  I've only tried it a few times, but I can never tolerate it longer than 15-20 minutes.  The cross strap doesn't sit right and I feel like it's always pulling on my neck.  Also, I feel like DD is always leaning toward my back (like she's trying to look behind me), but I don't know if SHE is doing that, or if she's off balance in the carrier and she's tending toward that way...

She will sit in it on my front and back just fine, and I have zero comfort issues with that, but she likes to look around and it seems like the side-carrying position is much better for that purpose...

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

  • I've never liked any side carry with anything. I think it's a marketing gimmick. ;-)

A hip carry is just really awkward in a buckle carrier.  Ring slings (or wraps) are great though!

Any suggestions for wraps to try at this age/size?  I can still carry her in the moby at 18lbs (if I get it wrapped tight enough before I put her in), but I can tell we're nearing the end of that.
  • I love my Moby Wrap. It's very simple but sturdy and reinforced and padded and I can nurse in it without anyone knowing. I've startled a few old ladies who were trying to peek at DD.
  • Woven wraps in general work for any age.  I have some brands listed in my siggy link but honestly any all cotton medium weight wrap will work well.  If you just want to do a hip carry, I think a ring sling is the best option as it's easiest to hip carry in and is compact (great for sticking in a bag if kiddo wants to walk but may want up).  Wraps are great for front, back, hip.  If you do get a ring sling, a single layer linen is very versatile and easy to care for.  My favorite is comfy joey but sleeping baby productions is cheaper and still quality.

    Thanks!
  • I did the hip carry in the ergo for a while.  I didn't find it all that comfortable either.  The strap dub into my shoulder and it seemed awkward.  My only suggestion is try shifting her so that she's rotated slightly more forward than your actual hip and see if that helps the feeling like she is sliding back-ness.

I actually bought a ring-sling to do a hip carry.  (I only had ergo when #1 was little.)  It works well, my son is about 24lbs now.  I wouldn't want to walk around with him on my hip for a long time in the sling, but it's great for vacuuming and grocery shopping where he wants to be "facing forward" and "helping" me.
