Bah! Transition from swaddle tips PLEASE!!!

I'm trying to stop swaddling LO due to him learning to roll and starting childcare ext month where the only thing allowed in the crib is a sleep sack (not the swaddle version). He always puts himself to bed. I put him in his woombie, set him in his crib, start his mobile and shut the door. He's usually is sleeping in less than 5 min. He fights miserably if I try to rock him swaddled or unswaddled. I try laying him in his crib unswaddled and he just screams. I'm all for CIO as we do that in the middle off the night, but he always stops at no more than 10 min (usually less than 5). Today when I tried nap unswaddled I finally gave in and swaddled him after 25 minutes of bloody murder screaming. Does anyone have any tips to ease the transition? Any STM with previous experience in this?

  • I think our daycare used a woombie for another kid. Are you sure it wouldn't be allowed?

I haven't started weaning off the swaddle yet with DD yet. With DS, I think we just went cold turkey. I would rock and nurse him and then put him down.

  • Yes. It's "restrictive" and the center prides themselves as a "least restrictive environment". I love that policy except when it comes to sleeping.

  • Just weaned our DS off the swaddle for this very reason his daycare wouldn't allow it. We started by leaving one arm out then both arms and finally just his middle swaddled. Now we use the sleep sack and he sleeps just fine.
  • I've tried to put LO down unswaddled a few times. He will fall asleep but be up in 20 minutes ugh. He starts day care next week and they don't swaddle there so part of me is hoping it helps him!

How long did you have to leave just one arm out before you could switch to both arms out?

  • The sleep sack made our transition much easier. We started the transition without it, and it was tough. But as soon as I got it things were fine and he sleeps great.

  • We, like PP, slowly transitioned with one arm out for about 3 nights. Last night when he woke up for his MOTN both arms were out and he was on his side. I left it this way, nursed him, layed him back down and he slept just fine with both arms out. Granted, I still 'swaddle' his mid-section and legs in the swaddle me sack, so he still has that tight feeling. I may do this for another 3 nights then transition to the sleep sack.

We used Baby Merlin's Sleepsuit at 2 months and never looked back
Tried this last night and I'm upset I didn't try it sooner.  She slept like a rock all night in her crib.  We only had one MOTN compared to our usual 3 plus we've been cosleeping a lot lately. She had the startle reflex really bad and in muffles it really well.  So pleased!  I think this will be my go to baby shower gift from now on!

We have had the suit for 3 days and can't believe we waited so long.  It doesn't restrict their arms so it is allowed at daycares.  We have had the best sleep in weeks since switching her over.

  • Sleep suit here, worked prefect from RNP swaddled to crib transition. I used it till she could roll from back to tummy. In sleep sack now and she likes to sleep on her side and occasionally rolls to tummy on her own. I love the sleep suit, def worth it!

Im not sure CIO is appropriate at this age. If LO is waking in the MOTN he's likely hungry and you should feed him. I guess I'm not much help for an answer to your question. My LO is swaddled at daycare and not at home. We sometimes swaddle arms out, but his sleep doesn't differ one way or the other.

He doesn't cry more than 5 minutes when he wakes in the middle of the night. Also if its after 3:30 a.m. We do feed him a small bottle. This was actually recommended by his pediatrician after we told him he will fall asleep during night feedings after only 1-2 ounces. Doctor said he's probably not hungry then, just is waking up and fussing and not sure how to self soothe yet. He told us to let him fuss for a few minutes to help him learn to self soothe. I understand its not right for everyone, but it was right for us and has worked great. LO has been waking up in the mornings MUCH happier.

  • Well we tried his "leggies" woombie today that has the snaps at the arms. We left one arm out for his last nap and it worked pretty well! Still more fighting and fussing than a normal swaddle but soooo much better than yesterday without the use of anything. Hoping we're on our way out of the swaddle completely. Thanks ladies!!
