Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Starting finger foods

DS is almost 8 months, will be in about a week, and he eats his solids, puffs, and many different of those snacks they have for babies to help him learn to pick stuff up and put in his mouth. He's been doing really well with it. Picks up the puffs and "cheetos" and can easily put them in his mouth.
I was just wondering when you guys started finger foods with your little ones? He shows a big interest in eating with his hands just nervous about giving him something and him choking!
Thanks

Re: Starting finger foods

  • DD just turned 8 months, and we started finger foods a few days ago. So far, aside from puffs, she's only done diced banana (an almost over-ripe one so she could mush easily) and avocado, which she LOVED. I gave her a piece of blueberry without the skin, but she didn't seem too crazy about it. I'm looking for ideas for other stuff, too, but I don't think she's quite ready for anything she really has to put effort into breaking up.

  • I've given DS the reduced sodium peas and steamed mixed veggies. He devoured it. He's also had squished black beans. There isn't a whole lot my little piggy won't eat.

  • We do BLW so we've done finger foods since 6 months.  Some of her favorites are:

Fruits: watermelon, pineapple, oranges, blackberries, peaches

Veggies: broccoli, sweet potatoes, snap peas

Meat: baked chicken, hamburger, pork chop

She also really likes whole grain breads/crackers/pasta, but I try to limit that to some extent because otherwise I feel like she'll fill up on carbs without trying the other food.

It's normal to be worried about choking, but remember that "choking" and "gagging" are NOT the same thing.  As long as they're making noises, they aren't choking.  DD has literally never choked on anything, but gagged quite a bit the first few weeks.  That's normal - they have to figure out how to move food around in their mouths, how to chew, how big of a bite they can handle, etc.  Start with food that is easily mushed up by little hands/gums, and then gradually introduce other things as you're both comfortable.
  • We also do BLW and DS has been on finger foods since 6.5 months.  At the beginning, I gave him ripe fruits which was and still is his favorites: banana, peach slices, kiwi slices, mango strips.

Now he's a pro.  He eats:
Fruits: aforementioned ones, plus whole blueberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, cherries (halved and peeled), plums

Veggies: over cooked carrots, broccoli, roasted sweet potato, summer and winter squashes, kale, spinach, Swiss chard, eggplant, tomatoes, peas, corn on the cob, red bell peppers, onions, chives

Meats/proteins: frittata, cheeses, tofu, lamb, beef burgers, cod, scallops, flounder, pulled pork, poached chicken

Like PP said, DS loves starches such as bread, pasta, noodles etc, but I try not to give him to much of those.

  • Thanks for the input ladies! I think were gonna try bananas today for the first time.
  • We started around 7.5 months with puffs, and once she got the hang of that, we moved on to soft finger foods like cooked sweet potato, cooked carrots, rice, cooked zucchini, cooked pears, cooked peaches etc.  I usually cut things into small cubes, but she has done the "fries" or "spear" shape as well and done fine. Just need to make sure it is mashable by their gums.

  • My DS is about the same age as yours. He isn't quite yet getting the idea of picking up the puffs and eating them, although he is really good with the spoon for his purees.
