Natural Birth

Feel kind of guilty

Anyone else committed to natural birth who is having / had a hard time with the Hypnobirthing method?  At my birthing center, it is a required class for FTMs and I really, really have hated the first two classes and find the book really 'meh.'  I feel like I get so much more out of prenatal yoga and Ina May's books.

Re: Feel kind of guilty

  • I don't think there's anything wrong with a method just not being your thing. I can not get through an Ina May book. That's like heresy in the natural birth world, but they kind of annoy me and just don't resonate with my personal style at all.

Fake your way through it if it's mandatory and prepare in the way that works for you. Try to keep  a positive mindset and see if there's something you can learn, but I wouldn't feel guilty that it's not your thing.

    Well said!

I enjoyed Hypnobirthing and thought it was quite effective.  But I can definitely see how it wouldn't be a perfect fit for everyone.
  • Do what's right for you, mama!

If I were in your shoes, I would ask myself: "Self, do you dislike this because it is bringing up something that you don't want to look at? OR Is it boring you, doesn't resonate and is not the best way to spend your birth prep time?"

    Follow your instincts. :)

  • It's required? Will they not let you birth their if you don't do it? I never got into the woo factor of the Hypnobirthing premise either. Can you tell them you'd rather do other things to prepare?

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • I've never heard of that being required. Interesting. I would just listen and see if there is anything you can take out it. Labor is such a personal experience what works for some will not work for other. I think Bradley and hypnobirthing are great option out there but they are not for everyone.
  • I don't think you need to feel guilty, and it might not be the best fit for you, I would take what I can from the class and disregard the rest.
