Trouble TTC

Intro :) unilateral hydro/cyst/PCOS

Hello all,

DH and I have been TTC#1 for almost 2 years now - not super long, but it is starting to take its toll.

We started Oct 2011 after an ultrasound checking for IUD placement showed a left hydrosalpinx - my physician told us how that impacts fertility and so knowing we might have a long road ahead we jumped right in.  Since that time I have had the hydro confirmed via HSG and also had a large dermoid cyst identified - both my left ovary and tube are coming out in November and I am hopeful that after the surgery we will be able to conceive naturally.  I am feeling a bit anxious about losing my whole left reproductive system, but my fertility doc is quite certain that the hydro is what is preventing pregnancy.

In addition to the physical difficulties, I also am anovulatory - blood screen after describing my cycles (35-75 days since I was 15) indicated PCOS.  In the last two years I have gotten that under control using metformin and diet changes and my cycles now are 29-35 days, ~70% of which are ovulatory.  Getting there!

Anyway, I am looking forward to chatting with everyone as we continue down this road together...

Happy Thursday :)

Re: Intro :) unilateral hydro/cyst/PCOS

  • Good luck with your surgery and your journey.

My partner just has a bilateral salpinectomy in early June - which was proceeded by an original dx of a single hydro and a large cyst.
I just want to share with you what we ended up being incredibly grateful for that someone shared with us:  be prepared to find out that, if when they get in there to look at one hydro, there is a decent chance that whatever may have caused it may be impacting the other tube as well.

We went into surgery expecting that my partner would lose one tube, because the HSG showed that the other one was open -- but when the Dr got in there she found that the scar tissue that was causing the blockage/hydro was also causing significant damage to the other tube.  Our RE made the call to take both of them out at that point, just so they wouldn't interfere with our IVF success when we got there.

It was painful after that to grieve, but we were grateful that just one person mentioned to us that it might be possible we would be on an IVF path after that surgery, so we weren't totally unprepared when the doc told us.

I hope your experience is much different.  There are many women out there who have a single tube remove and are fine - and hopefully you will be one of those, but if not then at least you will know you're not alone.
