SD's birthday party

I am trying to figure out what to do for SD's 9th birthday.  I have looked into several possibilities.  They all run about $200.  We can't do a slumber party mainly because we live out in the middle of no where and no one will come out here and we have 2 dogs that we would have to pay to board plus there really isn't a room big enough for a group of kids to sleep - aside from the living room but logistically not a great idea.

So, I have brought this idea up to DH and I wanted all y'all opinions too.  SD wants to take horseback riding lessons so badly but DH and I question her level of responsibility although she is getting better.  So I found a stable where we can get 2 horses for 2 hours for a bday party.  I thought that would be a nice introduction to horses for her.  I was a competitive rider for several years when I was a child (actually, younger than SD when I started).  I know what it takes and I understand her love of horses.  He is understandably nervous but I started riding when I was 5 and I wouldn't put SD into a situation I didn't think she was ready for.  Aside from the fact that this is just a bday party - not lessons yet.

What do you ladies think?

Re: SD's birthday party

  • I think it could be a "dream come true" kind of party for a little girl who's into horses!

  • I forgot to add that the 2 horses for 2 hours would be $175.
  • Would you be inviting her friends for this event, or would it be just the family? ?I think that I would limit the experience to either just the immediate family or perhaps one additional friend so that you can maximize her time on the horse. ?

I think it is a great idea and will give her an experience she will never forget! ?Share a picture with us, please!?

  • Sounds good to me!
  • That is a great idea!
  • Are you thinking of having just SD and one friend?  That way she could have the sleepover, too, sine just one girl could stay in her room with her, right?

  • I was thinking she could invite maybe 2 friends - my niece is 5 months older than SD and she would obviously be invited as they are very very close.  My niece however will not sleep over at anyones house.  Her last bday party my SIL brought my niece and then also brought her next door neighbor - I am a little concerned she would bring this other girl with her, not that I have a problem with the girl it's just that 1. it is a little rude and 2. I would like to keep the group to about 4 so that 2 could ride and 2 could talk and watch.  If that makes sense, although SD might decide to invite her as 1 of the 2 friends I would prefer that it be SD's choice.

As far as a sleep over it is possible we could have 1 or 2 friends stay over...  I would have to talk to DH about it and I would still worry about our dogs since they are rather large and high strung and are inside dogs.

  • I think this is a great idea!  Maybe videotape the event and then have them watch at night with popcorn?  I did this for my SD to motivate her to focus on school.  She took 4 lessons as a reward for her improvement in school.  Good luck with the party and keep us posted on the results!
  • So it's $175 at least for the party plus extra birthday stuff? It sounds like a decent plan if you can afford the price.

We took pinky to Build A Bear for her birthday. We didn't do a stupid party. We just took her in on her birthday and let her go. It was actually pretty reasonable. $10 for the animal and the clothes and stuff are on average $8 a pop, $10 for outfits. I was planning to take two friends with us but the timing just didn't work out. We took her out to eat at a place she picked and I brought a cake with us.

  • I think we would do a pizza/sub kind of think and a birthday cake - all in all probably around $200.  I looked at several other ideas and they would all be about the same.
