Working Moms

Why do people think the suggestion of getting rid of pets is helpful??

Every.single.time one of DS's get a sniffle, it is always suggested I get rid of the animals.

My mom is the biggest culprit, BUT, it also comes from friends and co-workers too! Just the other day right before taking DS2 to the doctor,  co-worker A was appalled when co-worker B suggested I get rid of the animals since DS2 is sick. Co-worker A said she can't get rid of the dog! That's just cruel! She needs to get rid of the cats, they are probably what he's allergic to. WTF??

The boys aren't even allergic to their pets. They just have the occasional cold!! Can I say I'm allergic to stupid and just get rid of all these morons??

  • That is ridiculous! Comfort yourself with the fact that what these people are saying doesn't even make sense! Studies have shown that kids that live with pets are HEALTHIER, less allergies and less asthma!!

  • Yeah, I would cite the studies that show having pets is associated with healthier children. And then Add that you'll note to take their future suggestions with a grain of salt since they Are apparently unaware of current science
  • Same comments came from our family too because DD was such a sick baby. I shut them down pretty quickly but it didn't stop the seed they had planted in my head.  We went and got DD's blood tested once she turned one and she actually is allergic to dogs. :(  Not saying that your child is allergic but ours happened to be.  Of course now we have to listen to the "I told you so's"....

  • Because people are stupid.  Even when I was pregnant I had people asking me if I was going to get rids of our pets.

  • Over a cold? That IS stupid.

  • It usually comes from people who don't have pets - so I don't think they get the emotional connection sometimes. What I used to say was, "I took in this pet, it's my responsibility - I will never abandon them." I can't stand the types of people who continuously get pets to just give them away either.

I have a cat that pees on things too @LibraryChica- it drives me insane!

  • When people say things like that about our dogs I always say, "DH and I believe that when you get a pet you commit to the life of the animal". That usually shuts them up.

  • I remember a lady who asked me when I was pregnant with DS1 what we were going to do about our "cats problem"?

I just gave her a look and said we have cats but not a cats problem.

For OP I would just say "The kids were tested and they are not allergic to animals". If a family member suggested that I would say that this is not up for discussion and I would appreciate them never bringing it up again. Then again, I'm blunt.

  • @Nicb13 - our pup needed surgery last year to remove bladder stones. Do you know how many people told me if the surgery costs more than putting her down, then you shouldn't have the surgery??? Seriously. Yes, it was a lot of money, but we had it, it was a fixable issue that shouldn't keep occurring (fingers crossed) and she is fine now.

Ugh. I wouldn't say I am super into my animals, but I do feel as if they are part of my family. I am not asking people to get it, I am just asking people to keep their stupid opinions to themselves!
