Looking for advice please

Hi, I'm not sure if I need advice....
I have an almost 8.5 year old son who is pretty typical. There are a few things that I've been keeping an eye on over the past several years since he started school. He's had poor self-control since he started Kindergarten. (He started seeing the guidance counselor once a week for "social skills" group last spring, 30 minute sessions a week on learning self-control, and she would come to the class and observe him) He has trouble knowing when people are being mean to him at times. He talks really loudly, even if you're right there next to him. If he gets overwhelmed he will burst into tears and either leave the setting (karate fun day last night, he said it "was hard") or stand and cry in front of everyone. Says he's "tired".
He loves science and math, and once he's interested in a subject (dinosaurs or solar system for example) he wants to know everything about it. He doesn't transition well sometimes. When he's testing at school he will guess if he doesn't want to take time to work it out (when we do work it out he knows the right answer all by himself), which leads to poor test scores even though he is really smart. He was in accelerated 1st grade and reads and does math well above his grade level.

His next checkup at the peds office isn't until April/May. I don't want him to go through another school year not being his best, if there's anything I can do to help him. Should I talk to his teacher/the counselor? Take him to the pediatrician to talk to him? Thanks!

  • Thank you for the response. I've kept my eye on him for a while bc the doctor said it was a good idea to revisit this when he was older (talked about it when he was 6).
My husband will not be on board with this.....I already know that. But he will probably support me.

Ugh....I don't even want to think about it.
