potty training - not sure what to do next...

So my 18 month old is going on the potty fairly reliably. Basically I decided to let her go diaper free beginning of last week and see what happens. I gave her a mini chocolate chip when she would peepee and so now she is peeing and pooping on the potty mostly by my asking her to go but has occasionally signalled she needs to go by saying "cookie!" Apparently cookies are synonomous with candy ;) I'm really impressed but unsure what to do next. I put her in diapers for naps and when we are out of the house, and sometimes she is dry when we get back sometimes there's a little pee. I don't wanna expect too much... but I don't wantto expect too little. Any experience oradvice out there as to where to go from here?

  • I would think that 18 months is really early for potty training...

  • I just had a similar discussion with DD's doctor. She said to get a small potty with a lid to keep in the car to use or to have very planned potty breaks while out & about.

DD is also 18 months and is letting me know about 1/2 the time when she needs to use the potty. I'm rolling with it and plan to get more structured with PL-ing in October since we have 3 trips between now & then, making it a little difficult to have a lot of consistency WRT the potty.

  • My older two daughters were completely night and day trained at 20 months.  We started at 18 months.  DD3 is not quite 1 but I am planning on doing it again.  I potty trained my DS at 28 months.  He was potty trained in June doing the 3 day method.
  • What is the 3 day method?

  • DS was similar. He is now completely PT after the three day method (after day one, no accidents) at 19 months. She seems very receptive, start putting her in underwear and put on plastic pants over that if you re worried about messes. I bought a fold up travel potty set from amazon, but he actually prefers just to be held over the toilets, so I do that instead in public. We did the rewards (mini choc chip and a sticker) for about a month. We don't do the chocolate anymore, though he occasionally will still ask for a sticker after using the toilet. Good luck!
