anyone else's dr or ob/midwife saying to wait to get the tdap?

When I asked my ob at my appointment yesterday about getting the Tdap vaccine she said that I should get it at the hospital after the baby is born.  She said you should not get it when pregnant.  This was not what I had read or heard but I did not say anything to her at the time since she is the doctor.  I have since read the CDC information which says it should be given to pregnant women.  The only thing it does negatively is that it is a catagory C drug.  I have heard most people saying that they got it while pregnant.  I was just wondering if anyone else's doctor is telling them to wait until after delivery.

  • My OB wants me to wait, so I will get it post-delivery.

  • My doctor saiid could get it while pregnant or in the hospital. He said it was my choice. I am getting it on Friday. I recently went to a pediatrician's open house and she highly recommended to get the tdap while pregnant.

  • I asked my Dr and she also recommended after delivery.

I asked my midwife and she said I will get it at the hospital after delivery. I had also read about getting it during pregnancy, but I trust them over what I've read on the internets so I'll be going with that. It probably won't make a huge difference in the grand scheme of things, as long as I have it.

  • According to the CDC getting it while pregnant can provide some immunity to the baby and is highly recommended. They suggest doing it between 27-36 weeks of pregnancy.

The CDC is pretty much as reputable of a source on contagious disease as you can get, so I'm inclined to listen to their recommendations. Luckily my midwife shares the same view and suggested I get the shot during pregnancy.

  • My doctor said I could go get it during 3rd tri, or if I didn't have it, I would be given it in the hospital. However, getting it now gives the baby some immunity. I am thinking that I would need to ask further questions of my doc to see why he/she would not want to follow the current CDC recommendation.

I completely agree. I'd be wondering why my doctor is blatantly going against CDC recommendations, especially considering Pertussis is at epidemic levels across the country.

  • My dr said if I don't get it by 35 weeks to wait until post partum.
  • I read that it is recommended to get by the 36th week of pregnancy.  My next appointment I will be 35 weeks 6 days.  If I talk to my doctor then and bring the CDC information do you think it will be too late to get the vaccine?

For you, yes, but for baby? How does baby get the protection, did they say? I know some antibodies pass through BM, but not everyone BF. I'm just curious.
^This. From what I read on the CDC site, it's recommended during third tri so that the baby will get some protection from the vaccine for the first couple of months of life. Otherwise, the baby doesn't start getting those rounds of shots until around 2 months.

I'm also curious to see what they mean by it being effective after the baby is born. Do they just mean for the mother? I understand it will be effective for the mother, but what about for the baby?

I'm planning to get it, but I have to go to a CVS minute clinic or similar to get it as my OB office doesn't offer it. I was going to go today, but I didn't get out of the house all day.

  • It was given to me at 30 wks. I was told that they prefer to do it during the third trimester because some of the antibodies will be passed to baby.
  • You are going to get all kinds of opinions on this.  My OB told me I would get it before being discharged from the hospital so that is what I am doing.  You can read lots of stuff everywhere and there seems to be evidence that it can be beneficial to baby, but I am choosing to listen to my doctor.

I guess just effective for you.... my OB said a lot of people are just nervous about vaccinations during pregnancy, but getting it done afterward is better than not doing it at all

  • My old college roommate is now a physician (family practice) and I asked her about this issue during one of our recent conversations. She said she'd recommend getting the DTap now "sooner rather than later" because the baby benefits from the antibodies our bodies make. I'm assuming it's an "antibodies in the blood" kind of thing and baby obviously shares our blood supply now. I'm going to ask my OB/GYN tomorrow at my next appointment. So much to think about!
  • Most of the OBs tell you to get it at the hospital because they don't want to deal with stocking it in the office. You have to have a special fridge, monitor the temp, replace when expired (which is super expensive for them), etc.  So yeah they go against CDC recommendations which is to get it before 37wks that way your baby will also have some immunity before they get their initial vaccination in a few months. I work at the hospital so my OB was honest and said she couldn't give it to me but I should go to CVS pharmacy and just get it done now.

I went to the CVS Minute Clinic today. Got there at noon. There were two people signed in ahead of me. At 12:40 the Doctor? came out and said it'd be better if I come back after lunch. So I'm sitting at Whataburger and waiting to go back at 2:30.

I better get the shot today! :) This is the CVS that my OB said they send people to all the time. It's practically across the street from there. DH may have to wait until the weekend. He doesn't have time during the week to sit for a couple hours to get a shot.

  • For mobile bumpies, I am 34 weeks and 2 days. I actually got mine today, my arm is a little sore, but it was no big deal. My Doc told me that the vaccination will provide the baby with some immunity now.  That works for me... plus one less shot after the baby is here!
  • I asked my doctor for it and she said to wait until after delivery. Even though the CDC is recommending it, it is still classified as Class C so she said she prefers to wait. Plus the baby will get some immunity through breastfeeding.
