need help! she wakes herself up..all.the.time!!

anyone have any luck with a white noise machine or any other tips or tricks would be appreciated..

My LO wakes herself up and immediately starts crying.  As soon as I pick her up, she's out like a light, and within a minute or 2, I can put her back down to sleep.  This happens in the middle of the night and the first couple times, I get up and put her down in her crib...and by the 3rd time, I just bring her to our bed and she ends up sleeping right through til morning and not waking.  Even her naps...she takes a 1 and a half to 2 hour nap but it's interrupted 2-3 times.

I don't get it..she's still sooo sleepy but something is waking her up.

Any tips/tricks/suggestions are greatly appreciated!!  I'm going back to work soon and this really needs to change.  I don't think the people at daycare are going to put her back down after she's "up" from her nap...and that will lead to her just being super cranky in the evenings.  I know that she does this so when she wakes, I don't make her play, I just hold her and she's literally asleep again within 30 seconds

Sorry...this ended up being really long...

  • We use a white noise machine but what we started doing is just not picking him up and letting him have a chance to self-soothe and put himself back to sleep.  At first he fussed/cried for about 3-5 minutes and then fell back asleep.  Now when he wakes up before it's time to get up he just moves around a little and then falls back asleep without any crying - just some grunting and random noises.  Not sure if this tactic will work for you but it did for us.

  • thanks @jfrancois.  I've actually tried that...she cries bloody murder.  She starts screaming at the top of her lungs and crying histerically...when I go in there a few minutes later, she had tears running down her face and she's just frantic.  I don't get it.

I think I might try the white noise, because, at this point, I have nothing to lose...

  • Does she move around in her sleep? Maybe she's bumping into the side of the crib? We have white noise for DD and I think it helps her sleep but she still randomly wakes up crying. Lately I think it has been due to teething.

  • We also added a small blanket to his crib.  It's a minky/fleece type, that I'm hoping will become more of a lovey.  Before adding it to the crib, I slept with it on our bed for 3 nights trying to get our "smell" on it.  We noticed that when we would put him in bed with us (after the similar several wake-ups that you talked about) that he would still wake up (not cry) but look for us and then lay his head back down when he realized we were still there - so I thought it might help to have something with our scent next to him.  Maybe that's the same thing that's happening with you?  Just another thing I thought of that we are doing.

Good luck!  Oh, and daycare may help find a solution to your problem too!  I know my daycare is really helpful when I ask them about things we can do together to solve issues like this one.  I ask about naptime ideas all the time because Max still won't nap very long by himself in his crib.  We have nighttime figured out it's the naps that are still short now.

  • We have always used a white noise machine and it really helps drown noises that might wake LO up. I always try and let him self soothe in the middle of the night. I give him 10 minutes and if he doesn't go back to sleep then I go and get him. 10 minutes does seem like a long time when your baby is crying. DS moves around a lot in his crib and I think he wakes himself up sometimes by bumping his head too hard, he usually goes back to sleep pretty quick.

  • We have the exact same problem, I could have written this word for word. We have used white noise since the beginning so that doesn't make any difference for us. Let me know if you find a magic trick that works.
