Am I being unreasonable here?

You know how I'd mentioned in an earlier thread that I was working with a recruiter to find a job? Well, on Monday, I got an email about a position that's close by my house. I emailed the recruiter back and asked where it was located exactly and never heard back. This morning, I check my email and there was an email from the agency telling me where it was located exactly. I didn't even get a chance to reply to the email and let them know that I'm still interested when the phone rings and it's the recruiter asking me if I could start this afternoon.

She called at 10:30am to ask me if I could be there by 12pm!! Seriously what the fuck? I mean I would have totally made it work had I been given at least a half day of notice but with 1.5 hrs to make arrangements and with the commitment I already have this afternoon I had to say no.

Basically, I told her that I would be more than happy to start tomorrow AM and that had I begin given a little more notice I would have made today possible but given the time I couldn't do much for today.

I'm so freaking irritated with this agency. It seems that they want me to drop everything I'm doing and run RIGHT NOW to start a job. Is it too much to ask to have at least 1 days notice?

That's ridiculous!! Especially if its not like a temp agency, where you'd be expecting last minute work.

You're not being unreasonable at all. It's completely ridiculous for them to expect you to be there this afternoon. Even if they had called first thing this morning, I would still think it's ridiculous.

That is ridiculous. I have never heard of such... I hope the company will understand and be ok with you beginning tomorrow (although I am sure the agency will not fess up to it being their fault.) I just hope they don't cost you a job. ((hugs))

You are not being unreasonable at all. I think it's highly unprofessional to not give someone proper notice. After all, you want them to be fully prepared and ready to roll, but how could you possibly expect them to be available at the drop of a pin without so much as a few hours notice? No, not cool.

It probably will. From the sounds of it they promised the company that they'd have an employee there today. So, I'm assuming they are calling anyone in the database who qualifies and whoever is willing to start gets it.

The worst part is that by me refusing it they basically flag my account. From what I've read on their website the more times you decline an offer the less you become an option for them because essentially you're difficult. Fucking bullshit.

That is completely ridiculous. I hated dealing with those stupid recruiting agencies! It wasn't until i started working directly with my sister (who is a recruiter) that I started getting into places. A lot of what goes on at those agencies is really crazy and stupid - never can trust a word they say!

You aren't being unreasonable at all. I'd kind of worry about the work environment that you would be walking in if they needed you to come in that day. They could have people dropping like flys. I know that you want to find something but it could be an unhappy work environment by the sounds of it.

That is so not normal. What is the big emergency that can't wait until tomorrow? It makes me feel like the whole company is wonky and not likely a place I'd want to work for. I'm sorry they are dumb and think you have no life just because you have no job. Who does that?! You can not be expected to drop everything the second they call. That's so unprofessional it's crazy.

I don't think it's the companies fault actually. If I got the initial email monday that means this job has been open for more than a day. It's the agency that's fucking up and not working. It's almost like the recruitment agency forget to fill the position in time. I bet the company would be irate if they found out how the agency is finding them employees and how rude they are being.

I agree that this is crazy and I've never heard of any company (or recruiter) doing this! I would think it's more likely that the recruiter dropped the ball with this company and it came to "either get someone here or we are going with another recruiter". Sounds like the recruiter really doesn't have their act together!

What really sucks is that it's actually a pretty cool job. She told me the company name when she shouldn't have and I googled to see exactly what they do and it seems like a pretty awesome place to work.

Not unreasonable at all. That's very unprofessional, to wait until the last minute. If they do flag your file, I would contact them to have it removed, as it was their error to call so late. And if the recruiter doesn't like that, I'd contact their supervisor, so that they know they're doing a craptacular job.
