Common food allergies

So I've eliminated soy and nuts because C has some signs of a food intolerance (I'm vegan so no dairy or eggs already), but it's been 2 weeks and she is still having mucousy poops occasionally and is really gassy. She also has a red area around her bum (not diaper rash). The fact that not all of her poops are mucousy (the frequency has gone down and they started to look more seedy and less mucousy) makes me think that she may be sensitive to something else that isn't as pervasive in food as soy or nuts (they are in almost everything!)

What are some other common allergens? Should I wait another week and see what happens, or should I try to eliminate some other potentially allergenic foods? I haven't been eating strawberries since I heard they can cause gas in BF babies (not sure if that is true or not but she is so gassy I thought I'd give it a try).

  • How about caffeine? I don't know if it's true but have heard caffeine can cause them to be gassy. I'm sorry you're dealing with that!

  • I am also interested here and can empathize. Gave up dairy as of two days ago after a bloody stool at dic's advice, have been told wheat is another common cause of food allergies? And it truly is in everything! You'd basically be down to fruits nuts and meat if you eat it. We had some refusing to eat and a little blood again today, so I am crossing my fingers it just takes a few more days for dairy to leave system as I can't imagine cutting wheat myself!

  • What about beans? I find LO to be more gassy when I eat black beans.

  • I have a friend that went through some mega food allergy stuff when she was bfing her DD.  Now she's trying to get pregnant again and they have secondary unexplained fertility so they've got her back on gluten free and dairy free.  She said she's also struggling with corn and read somewhere that corn is the next gluten.  You think wheat is bad, corn is in ever.y.thing.

@MrsMMalone on Pinterest there are a bunch of "Paleo" recipes if you do end up having to go wheat and dairy free.

  • Thanks for the replies ladies! I am caffeine free so that can't be it, and being vegan I can't really give up beans if I'm not eating soy or nuts either...but it's not so much the gas that's the issue, it's that she recently went through a phase where she was refusing to eat and her tummy hurt...that along with the mucousy poop led the doc to suggest that I eliminate soy and nuts. The doc said first it was mucous, then blood, so I needed to try and figure out what she is intolerant of quickly :( Poor baby!! Corn is a good idea, and I do think wheat/gluten is another common one for BF babies. Thanks for the ideas!

  • I'd wait it out for at least two weeks, it takes a while for stuff to leave your system.  Good luck!
  • OP, I'm vegan too, and if he has another stool with blood, I'll be trying these same things. I'm hoping to try probiotics first though... waiting on an answer from the pedi on that. I hope you figure it out!
  • I'd give it more time. I've heard it takes 2 weeks to leave your system, then another 2 weeks to leave your LO's.

Corn and wheat are other major allergens. I think my DS has a corn sensitivity on top of milk and soy.

Any chance it's thrush? That could account for the gas and the redness, but probably not the mucus.

Haha I just commented on your post before I read this :) it's nice to know there's another mama in the same boat, as much as this boat blows!

I've been lurking for a while and have been meaning to introduce myself, will do in a separate post.  But my son seems to have a potato allergy, strange I know, but while I was eating potatoes he would be gassy and have green poo. Since cutting them out he has been less gassy.
ETA: I have done some research and found it's more common an allergy than I would have thought.
