What do you get other than a spinal?

I had my first daughter vaginally so this will be my first section (Previa). I was curious other than the spinal or epidural, what are you given? Is it required that they give you drugs to relax? Or what is normal? I was really hoping for a med free natural birth this time and really do not want any drugs given if possible. I haven't asked my ob what the norm is at my hospital, but am wondering everyone else's experiences with this. I have a bit of anxiety naturally so I'm wondering if I will do ok getting the spinal with nothing else! Any advice or info?

In my experience you get spinal, epidural, or I think General anesthesia? The one the]at can put you to sleep.

I wasn't given any option for drugs for nerves.
So the only thing I had was an epi and oxygen. During that was plenty, but after I wish I had more.

I was given a spinal and antibiotics as a precaution. I wasn't given any anti anxiety meds. They said I could have them after the baby was out but I didn't need them. After delivery I was given pain meds as needed. They did put morphine in the spinal so I didn't need any other pain meds until the next day. I definitely suggest taking the pain meds. There were several times I didn't think I needed them and then they wore off and I was in quite a bit of pain. (Don't worry the pain is mostly with movement and getting up and was gone after a week) Hope this helps. GL!

Definitely will take the meds after... I'm just worried about being drugged up when the baby comes out. I didn't know if they give you something because I have read some birth stories of moms saying they don't remember things because of the drugs!

I only had spinal and anti nausea meds, plus painkillers after. I was alert and coherent the entire procedure. Maybe unplanned/emergency sections have more heavier drugs..

I was given the spinal (only). The PP is correct, I have only heard of a spinal, epidural or general anesthesia.

The spinal is great. It didn't really hurt to get it, I couldn't really feel anything and I didn't get sick.

I was worried that they would want to give me other drugs, but they didn't even offer them. I wanted to be awake, alert and I wanted to remember his birth. The spinal was perfect, I didn't have any "mental" effects.

I had an epidural, no meds to relax or anything like that...the only meds they gave me at that time were for my Pre-E, so that's a special instance. Even with the Mag Sulf I was on for that, I still remember the birth and seeing my son for the first time...the rest of the day after the C-Section is a little less clear, but I remember him being born very clearly. I took pain meds after the C-Section, mostly Tylenol and even that was a fairly low dose. I have a fairly high tolerance for pain, I think, but I was also in the hospital for a week after the C-section, due to the Pre-E, so being stuck mostly in bed helped me recover pretty well.

Both of my c sections they gave me morphine in my back as well. I was worried that I would be sick and out of it like with my first, but it was a whole different rxperirnce

I had general anesthesia after the spinal failed. I woke up about 2 hours after DS was out, and got to see him about half hour later. I was pretty groggy, but I had had a lot of meds during labor, so I'm really not sure what was from the general anesthesia. But I remember everything about that first time I saw him. As for anxiety meds, I really don't know what they were giving me. I went for the induction at 6pm, remember most stuff until about 3am, was getting a little belligerent, they gave me an epidural, and its all pretty hazy until they told me we were doing a c-section.

I didn't get any anxiety meds. I got morphine and oxytocin in my IV near the end of the c/s - the morphine for the pain after the spinal wore off and the oxy to help contract the uterus. You don't have to get narcotics though.

I had a spinal and right as they were beginning the c section I panicked a bit. The antheselogist said he could give me something to relax me but I might not remember the birth so I declined and got it together. I remember everything fine. First c section had morphine in the spinal, second did not. I will be having a third soon and definetly want the morphine again in the spinal, it made a big difference in the hours afterwards.

I had my 3rd csection almost a month ago. They put morphine in the spinal, towards the end. I also got quite a bit of zofran (anti nausea med) as I kept feeling like I was going to throw up. While I was happy with the morphine, it did suck because I started getting itchy shortly after getting it. I was offered benydral but knew it would make me more tired and I didn't want that. I was only given the option of having the zofran and benydral. Everything else I had no say in.

I also delivered early due to pre-e/HELLP syndrome, although at 30 weeks. I had to be under general anesthesia and had the mag sulfate drip for about a day and a half after. I used the morphine drip while I was on the mag, but then went to Tylenol with codeine, as I don't like narcotic pain meds--they make me sick. I delivered on a Saturday night and I didn't get to see LO until Monday around lunch time. It was because my health was still unstable due to the HELLP though, not because the c/s itself.

Prior to the c-section I had an epidural. I was also given IV antibiotics and a liquid antacid (which I threw up). Once my son was out they knocked me out without my knowledge or consent. I initially thought I had fallen asleep since it had been a long 24 hours. Then I heard them mention the drug they gave me. It is a drug that is used in IV sedation to cause the patient to forget the procedure.

Mine did the spinal, and if I wanted they'd add morphine to it to help the pain after.. When adding morphine to the spinal the pain relief was supposed to last up to like 16 hours..or something like that.

I was only drugged up because I went through an induction before my c/s. I think that's what happens a lot of the time when women say they are so out of it. They only gave me a spinal with my c/s, and then I got percocet for pain maintenance afterward.

I had the spinal and the anesthesiologist put morphine in there which was fine with me. He said it lasts for up to 24 hours. I did vomit on the operating table so he also put medication in my IV for that...I believe it was Zofran. I was completely awake and aware throughout the entire thing. I did also have some itching afterwards and they gave me Benadryl through the IV (that was in recovery) and did vomit a few more times over the course of the next 12-16 hours so I did get more Zofran. Everyone is different so if you feel like you don't want the morphine then just let them know but I will say that there is still a pretty significant amount of pain in the area of the incision afterwards and getting in and out of bed can be quite the feat so definitely consider the morphine.
