Weird or sweet?

Sooo, I was just reading to LO. I happened to be reading one of the books from MIL.

When I got to the end I noticed she had signed it; love always- giggi and gumpy (from heaven).....

Honestly, seems a little morbid to me. My FIL passed away last March, before I was pregnant. DD is the second grandchild born since he passed but obviously the first one where he wasn't even here for the pregnancy. I want her to definitely learn about the person her grandfather was but signing his name one things just seems like a little much to me. Especially when she's only 4 months and the reality is she will sadly never meet him.

I don't know, maybe I'm being too cynical - so what do you think - weird ? Or sweet??

I honestly think it is sweet. Kinda pulls at my heart strings a little cause I have something that was signed from my great grandma who I never met. Who died the day my mother was going to show me to her. I cherish it.

I would think it was sweet. My mom bought DD a toy eeyore on behalf of my dad since he passed away two months before she was born. DD loves playing with it so we take it everywhere. I think if she ever asked who bought it I would say it was from her Grandpa, since that was the intent behind the gift.

Neither - I think it is sad. :-( Your MIL is obviously really sad that her husband never got to meet his grandchild. She probably misses him a ton. That makes me sad.

I think it's sweet. It's letting her grandfather be a part of her life even when he's not here.

I think it's sweet, but I also have a coffee cup with a picture of my sister and I with our grandma and have told Elisha that it is me his aunt and his great nana who he unfortunately will never meet. (yes I tell him all of that). His great nana passed away 9 years ago, he was actually due 9 years to the day after she had passed away. I think it's a way for your grandma to express not just her love for your daughter but also how much your grandpa would have loved her too. It's possibly a coping mechanism, as well as a hard habit to break.

You ladies bring up great points, but I"m kind of with @melandjames14.....

I understand she misses him - but she's got 6 other grandkids who did know him - I think it's totally appropriate to sign books for them with his name, since DD will never know him, I think the effort to incorporate him into her life needs to be different and I just feel like signing his name into a book when she's only 4 months old is a little morbid.... or maybe i"m just a little cynical!

And to whomever brought up signing his name on bday cards --- I'm sure she'll do that at least once too... Although - maybe it is part of her healing process, in which case I'll shut my mouth!
