30th Birthday Themes for DH

DH's 30th is coming up. Normally we just have a dinner with our parents. I'd like to throw a bigger party this year. Our house isn't huge so I'm thinking of having an open-house party. I'm thinking of doing sandwiches- meatballs, cold cuts, and pulled pork. Would it be weird to have a theme? Pinterest ideas so far include: mustaches, 30 sucks (suckers), 30 rocks (rocks or pop rocks), and super heros (triple x). Thoughts?

Re: 30th Birthday Themes for DH

  • I love the idea of an open house for things like a holiday party, but for a birthday where you sing and there is cake, it needs to be a set start time IMO. To find a theme, I would think of the things/hobbies he likes. I don't love the sucks/rocks thing and the super hero thing is kind of juvenile, unless he is into superheros as a hobby or something.

  • For DH's 40th birthday, I just decorated and put out pictures of them around the house. The theme was New Orleans, but that was really only the food.
  • I disagree with the park idea. Not for adults. That just seems odd to me.

If you need to cut the list, maybe do only friends and something separate with family?
  • I was thinking cupcakes, but that makes sense. Would a Chicago Bears theme be lame too? Just ditch the theme?

  • Is he a huge Bears fan? If so, that's totally cool. I assume it's during football season, so it would make sense.

I would not go over the top with any theme that your husband isn't known for...like I saw a cute them with bowties, but the guy was known for wearing bow ties all the time so it made sense.
  • But I have to say I loved the big blown up pics of DH from birth-now at our party. Everybody loved looking at them.
  • He loves the bears , beer and batman. His birthday is in November, but i need to start budgeting. We are repairing our relationship with his parents, so I don't want to have it there if i can avoid it. That's why I was trying to avoid a sit down meal. If I serve sandwiches, sides, beer, wine and non alcoholic drinks can I avoid needing a seat for each person?

  • Yes, IMO, you can. Especially if it's slider sized sandwiches. When I'm having a cocktail type party I always pull my dining room chairs out of the dining room since that's where I serve the food, then spread them around the house for more seating. As long as you don't need a knife to eat anything, you can go without tables. IMO and from what I've read about entertaining.

Does DH's name by any chance start with a B? BC The Bears, Beer, Batman and Husband's name that starts with a B would be cute. LOL

I didn't mean at a park with swings and slides... I meant a nature park with picnic tables & grills. We have a ton of those here & lots of people have everything from reunions, parties, and family get togethers there.
Not everybody lives in the pretty mountains, silly! ;)

I wish we had somewhere like that! I originally wanted to have a food truck catered event, food trucks are kind of a big deal here, but I couldn't come with somewhere to have it where it wouldn't be open to the public or require people to go from out front were the truck was to the back yard where the party was.

  • And it's in Nov. so unless you can have a bonfire in said nature preserve, I'm thinking it's probably not going to be warm enough.
  • We live in San Diego, it might not be that cold :) regardless, we dont have a place like that.

DH's name does start with a B! How do you think that could work? A Few of B's favorite things- Beer, bears and batman?

  • We live in south Florida and I just had DH's 30th birthday party at a restaurant. I reserved the entire outdoor bar and patio. It has couches and lounge type furniture. We had it on a Sunday afternoon when the restaurant does all drinks and appetizers half off. So it was a win win. Super nice place. 1/2 off the entire bill.(I paid obviously as the host) and I didn't have to clean up! If you have drinks and yummy food I don't really think you need a theme! Everyone will have a good time!

There's a cool new brewery that opened a few months ago. They have a tasting room but don't serve food because they aren't licensed too. They do have food trucks come certain days of the week. I wouldn't want to pay for the whole brewery's food and drinks though. I might ask if they would consider wristbands or something similar.... Lame?
