Rice cereal

I believe this has been discussed before, but on my mobile app, when I search the forum it changes to theknot.com

Anyhow, my baby has suffered pretty severe reflux since he was about a week old- vomit coming up out of his mouth and nose simultaneously. Not every feeding but often enough to be concerned. We have changed formulas, keep him propped up during and after feedings, burping him often, Zantac, now Prevacid, and he still has issues- coughing on it, spitting up, vomiting, and basically every time we burp him you can hear it come up into the back of his throat and he swallows it back down or sometimes chokes a little. Side note, he is not failing to thrive. He is a big boy and loves to eat. He is 8.5 weeks old, 13.8 lbs and eating 5-6 ounces every 3 hours, and just starting going 4 hours between feedings at night. I asked the dr about rice cereal and he said it is fine or I can try a formula with it already moved in such as Enfamil AR. Don't want to do that bc we are on a formula for milk protein allergy. So my question is: What is the biggest concern with adding a little rice cereal at 2 months? I'm beginning to be a little concerned about his rapid weight gain as he was only 7 lbs at birth. If we try to give him any less formula, he gets extremely pissed and cries until he gets his full. Has always been this way. The pedi doesn't seem to be too concerned about the weight or adding rice cereal. We are seeking the opinion of a GI doctor regarding the reflux as per the pedi.

TIA for your feedback!

Re: Rice cereal

  • Both of my older boys had AR really bad and was oh Rice Cereal early on but looking back now it never helped with the spit up. They did it just as much as they did before and I had a lot of Rice Cereal in their bottle too.

  • We put some rice cereal in N's bottles because of slient reflux. We don't do Enfamil AR because she also has a sensitive tummy and only does well on Gentease. Anyway, when I asked around, I was told to watch for major constipation. You also obviously have a risk for developing an allergy. Lastly, it's adding empty calories so the nutrition isn't balanced, but it sounds like he's doing well and his pedi isn't concerned. We do 1 teaspoon for every 2 oz, but I was told the full dose is 1 teaspoon for every ounce.
