Stretchmark Prevention

Calling all 2nd and 3rd and..... time mommas: what did you do to prevent stretch marks??? Did it work? If not, what's your go-to plan this time??? Help a first time momma out! :)

Re: Stretchmark Prevention

  • I HEAR that the elasticity of your skin is actually genetic and there's not a lot you can do about it. However, I still lathered cocoa butter on daily and didn't get any stretch marks. My mom also did this and no stretch marks for her.

I don't really believe that lotion helps prevent them, I don't know the technical terms but I believe they develop deeper than what lotion can penetrate. Drink lots of water, I have heard that can help. I only got two tiny stretch marks on each love handle and they are so small and white now you can't see them. I got them two weeks AFTER I had my DD, I call them my shrink marks.

  • My godsons mother, who's now a mama of two said she kept away stretchmarks by rubbing 100% almond oil on her body every night before bed. She compared with her sister who tried the expensive creams and such, her sister still ended up with massive amounts of stretch marks and She only ended up with one small one on her second pregnancy. None with her first. I'm definitely doing the same with this baby.... we'll see if she's right on it working.
  • I did nothing and have none. I think it's mostly genetic.

  • I got them with my first pregnancy and they aren't that bad. I've been using bio oil morning and night :)
  • I did Burt's Bees Belly Balm and an olive/almond oil they have. I still got some stretch marks, but it wasn't until I hit 37 weeks, and they were small.
  • I have also heard that it is mostly genetic. When I was pregnant with DS, I was shopping for some maternity clothes in Destination Maternity and was talking to a consultant there. They carry products for stretch marks. The lady said that in order to prevent stretch mark it is better to use oil. I picked up some from them called Mama Mio. It was kinda expensive, maybe $35. She said that the lotion is best to reduce the appearance of stretch marks once you have them. I don't know if this is true, but I listened to her. I don't have any stretch marks from my 1st, but my mom also never got any so it's a toss up if the oil actually helped.
  • I do hear it is genetic as well...however I used super concentraited/pure Vitamin E Oil you find in the vitamin section (wasn't super expensive).  It was a tip from another Mom and it worked for her as well!
  • It is genetic.  You can't lather yourself up with anything to prevent stretchmarks.  That said, if you  get itchy skin, on your stomach or breasts, coconut oil really helps.

  • I used Burt's Mama Bee e oil. Two bottles last pregnancy. No marks. Mom has a million stretch marks. Who knows. Oh, and $8 a bottle.

  • I must take after my day's side because my mom has them really bad, like the raised, thick ones. I rarely used lotion and I only got two little ones barely worth mentioning.

Good luck, that's all I can say. I lathered myself with lotion and vit E oil my entire pregnancy and I still got some stretch marks. My biggest advice would just watch how much weight you gain.

  • Another vote for genetics! Mine seemed pretty bad but they faded after a few months. Rubbing vitamin E oil on them after the fact helps diminish if you do get them.

  • With DS, I didn't get stretch marks until into my 8th month, then BAM! But I didn't do any prevention, and also developed PUPPs, which I partially blame on my stretch marks not really fading. I started using Arbonne's body creme a couple months ago, and my marks have faded, and I'll be using their collagen supplement as well whenever I really start to feel stretched this go around.

  • With my DD my dr told me not to waste my money on anything for stretch marks cause there is nothing you can do to prevent them. I was blessed with tiger stripes and already have new ones on my boobs.

One more vote for genetics. My mom has none, I have none; and that was with a 40lb weight gain and nearly 10lb baby. All I used was lubraderm when it got itchy.

  • I think it's all genetic. I religiously applied Arbonne's firming cream all 9 months with DS, and I look like a freaking tiger.

It really is genetic, and not necessarily just your mother. Your skin elasticity genes could come from any of your ancestors.

I never used anything and the only stretch mark I got was a small one across a surgical scar that I have by my belly button. I'm guessing it's because the scar tissue is less elastic.

  • Thanks ladies! I'm sure it is genetic in that lucky people have very elasticy skin. But in case I'm an unlucky one I'm gonna lather up to give my skin all the moisture I can to encourage stretching without the marking! At least the end result is worth it- tiger stripes and all!
  • My mom got stretch marks really bad with all of us and my sister had a baby in January. She scars SO easily and her doctor told her genetics as well. Well she used and essential oil called "baby me". She didn't get a single stretch mark! And you could say that stretch marks run in our genes. So give it a try! It's really cheap she still has half the bottle and is pregnant again using it!
  • I used olive oil only on my belly. I have no stretchmarks on the belly but I have them on my hips and boobs. I don`t  know if it`s a coincidence but where I used olive oil no stretchmarks appeared.
