Ergo??

So I was reading on the CD FB page a post about when to move the baby from the Ergo carrier to the cart... I hadn't really researched carriers, I have read about attachment parenting and baby wearing and still am not sure where I weigh in yet. I think a lot of it depends on the child, some want and need the attachment and some are more independent people even from birth... But looking at a Ergo for a child that is big enough to sit in a cart seem like a lot of extra weight and strain on a woman's body... How do you ladies feel about baby wearing and when it's appropriate to let them ride in the cart?

Re: Ergo??

  • I loved my Ergo and used it all the time with DS. He was sitting in a cart as soon as he was able to support himself well enough though.

  • Just as a warning, even when they can sit in the cart, some don't like it as much.

Also, you need to keep the cart close to you at all times. Which can become troublesome when grocery shopping. A carrier is a lot easier for this.

The nice thing about a carrier like the Ergo is that you can wear it front, side and back. Plus, the straps are designed to distribute a child's weight better.

I carried my 23 pound daughter for walks in the carrier at 18 months. It was more of a work out for my thighs than my back.

  • I haven't used one yet but I don't have a problem with babywearing at any age. There are numerous studies and years of research on how beneficial close physical contact can be for babies/toddlers/preschoolers so we plan to do it as much as we can (assuming LO cooperates). Done right, it's not really any physical strain on a woman's body, either.

That said, there are much better carriers out there for toddlers/preschoolers than the Ergo, such as a Kinderpack.

  • I love my ergo! I still use it with DD who will be 2 in November. I didn't get it until she was a little older, I started with the baby Bjorn we got as a gift but that got uncomfortable really quickly. It just doesn't have the parent support that the ergo does. I'll be using my ergo from the beginning with this one.

  • I loved my ergo with DD and plan on using it again. DD was put into the cart when she was big enough to support herself without falling over.

  • I loved my ergo for my son. We used it until recently. My husband will still occasionally wear him in the back carry for longish hikes. My son is 17 months and a big kid! We literally used it everyday until he was just over a year. He even "walked the line" with us when we were on strike for a week.

  • Love the ergo! My 2 year old can still go in it at 28lbs and doesn't feel too heavy (of course I can't wear him right now :(). We even put my 3 year old (now 4) in it when she fell asleep trick or treating last year and she didn't even feel awful at 36 lbs! I highly recommend it!! Also liked the moby wrap for newborns and small infants!
