cutting grocery costs

With me not working currently, we need to trim some expenses. One area I KNOW we have excess spending is our grocery shopping. Other than leaving dh at home while I shop......

Does anyone have menu ideas that would serve a family of 3.5.....dd is moving to dorms so will be here sporadically and ds2 isnt on table foods yet. Ideas that are gluten and milk free or easily modifiable are best for us.

I know fried rice and stir fry are cheap and easy but theres got to be more out there.

Dh and I often eat leftovers for lunches and ds1 packs lunches for school.

Re: cutting grocery costs

  • Really, I find anything other than straight meat as the main dish (like grilled chicken breast, steak, etc.  Anything that kind of stretches the meat further) makes for inexpensive meals.  We had burritos last night (tortilla, grilled chicken, black beans, rice, pico, cheese, sour cream) and one big chicken breast made enough for dinner and lunches for both MH and me.

Spicy bean burritos are one of our meatless favorites.

We do homemade pizza and that's very inexpensive, plus it's easy.  I make a big batch of pizza sauce and then freeze individual portions.

Soups usually make a lot of food for less cost.

I think my biggest tips are to meal plan so you only buy what you need, don't waste food, and cook from scratch.  Any convenience type items are going to be  more expensive and not as good for you anyway.

  • 5dollardinners.com has some good ideas. I think she even has a seperate section for gluten free meals.

  • mexican - make rice bowls with rice, beans, some meat, lettuce, cheese (daiya for dairy free), cheap tomatoes in season, guacamole (Whole Foods has avocados for $1 this friday i think)

brown rice pasta is good if you rinse it after cooking (otherwise it gets gummy in my experience) with homemade sauce or jarred if you get a good deal and you prefer it.

go to the grocery store mid morning for marked down meat and bakery items that they want to sell that day (i get beef or sausages that you can tell are still fresh, with no change in color), or right after lunch and dinner, around 2-3pm or 8-9pm, to get rotisserie chickens or other hot items that didn't sell. my grocery store marks them way down. i freeze meats or bread (break a loaf into whatever size you need for a meal, wrap in plastic wrap and then in foil.)

get rainchecks for really good deals that have sold out. then you can get the item later when it's restocked and if you're lucky you'll have a coupon too.

  • I use onceamonthmom.com. Each month there is a dairy free and gluten free menu. I think you can access the recipes without a membership.

  • Foods that you can vary like soups, salads, rice, gluten free pasta, or stir fry... You can always swap the meats or veggies for whatever is on sale.

Check your local ads for specials and ask your stores which days they get new inventory in because they usually have additional savings.
