Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

New early wake up time.

LO has consistently been waking up between 7 and 7:30 for several weeks/months. Last week, he decided he wants to get up about 45 minutes earlier, around 6:30 to 6:45 every morning. He then babbles to himself "dadadadadadada" for awhile, eventually turning into crying. Sometimes he plops back asleep, but most often not. This begins to throw off the the rest of his day, because he wants to eat earlier and nap earlier too.

Here are some possible reasons why we think he might be doing this:

Practicing talking is exciting.
Earlier bed time because he finished his milk earlier because he is getting better at drinking from a sippy.
Less milk before bed.
The last two mornings have had loaded diapers, so his BM cycle might be the culprit.
Teething pain.

Any other ideas out there? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • OMG. This is my daughter. Shes almost 14 months. and she wakes earlier and is also having hard time with napping as much as she needs.  I'm sorry I'm not any help but want to follow this to see any advice. i'm a very tired mama.

  • No idea, but your early days are the days I'd go "Thank Jesus, he let me sleep in." LOL

In my experience, they go through these early waking periods occasionally and often go back to their more routine times. Good luck!
  • My 17 month old has no consistency. Some days she will sleep until eight. Others, she is up at 6:30. It makes absolutely no difference what time she went to bed. Just be thankful for the days you get a little more sleep!!
  • That's sleeping in in my house. For the longest time, DS was getting up between 5 and 5:45. I remember sometimes seeing some 4:45 wake-ups. When he started sleeping past 6, it was heavenly. Sad, I know.

Any adjustments we tried to make failed to reset his wake up time. Often times, it would cause him to get up earlier.

  • DS wakes up promptly between 6 to 6:10 every morning - it's astonishing how consistent it is. Nothing we've tried has made a difference in making him sleep in longer, so now we take him into bed and cuddle for another half hour before we get up. Usually he is content to just cuddle so I don't mind too much.

Sure it might throw off our schedule for the day but there really isn't much you can do about that. You can make an environment conducive to sleep but you can't force them to sleep. I stopped trying to figure out "why" DS does things because there's not always an answer, especially when it comes to sleep.

this. Just go with the flow. Our schedule flexes depending on wake up time.

  • I never try to understand the sleep schedule because he is always changing...just go with  the flow.
  • Thanks for all of the input!  It is hard in my sleepy state to now wonder why?  But I get there is no real knowing and hoping it is a short phase.  Sometimes I kinda wonder if he might be "talking" to his stuffed animal.  Appreciate the input!
