Babies: 6 - 9 Months

How much solid food is your LO eating?

I started DD at 6 months (she's almost 7.5 months now).  If I get her to eat 5 oz. in a day (we do purees), that's a lot.  I know solids aren't the main form of nutrition right now, but I still feel like she should be eating more.  On a typical day I probably get 3-4 into her.

Part of the problem is that she never wants veggies, only fruit....I don't want to offer only fruit every time. She's really not warming up to veggies at all, not even sweet potatoes.  Apples, peaches, pears, plums, bananas...that's about all she'll entertain.

I think I worry because her weight % has dropped the last 2 pedi visits (she's still just under 50%, so not too tiny). Pedi wasn't that concerned but if it drops again I think she might be; I don't feel DD always nurses enough either, but that might be in my head. She always seems satisfied.

Just wondering how much others LOs are eating if you do purees, and also if anyone has any advice on getting her to eat veggies.

TIA!

  • DS hasn't had any fruit yet only veggies and meat. But some of the veggies he didn't love so I mixed them with oatmeal. Then I slowly reduce the amount of oatmeal after a few different times. This helps get used to the veggie flavour and helps with the texture of some things. Good luck.

  • 7 months is still pretty young so I wouldn't worry about it. DD has been eating solids since 5 months but she didn't eat many in a day until just a couple weeks ago. I noticed if I fed her too much she would cut back on her formula a lot so we only did really small quantities of solids until she was ready. She didn't start 2 meals a day until 8 months.

  • We don't do purees, but from an "amount" standpoint, I can tell you that there are some days that DD doesn't even eat solids.  We usually offer at dinner, and sometimes at breakfast or lunch, but that isn't typical.  Have you considered letting her try something soft that's a finger food?  Like super steamed or roasted carrots or sweet potatoes?
  • Dd has been very slow to become interested in solids. She is doing maybe 1-3oz per day and only fruits. She doesn't even love several fruits. I feel like she'll do better once she can start finger foods and self-feed. We only offer once per day now and I will move to twice per day maybe in a month.

  • My DS started cereals and purées at 4 months, to help with severe spit up issues. Now at 8 months he eats 2oz oatmeal and sometimes 2.5oz fruit at breakfast, 4oz fruit and/or veggies purées for lunch, 2oz oatmeal and 4oz of meat based purées at dinner. He still BFs on demand on my days off and drinks 20oz while at daycare (did not decrease at all with the addition of solids). For my baby, starting at 4mo was the best decision we ever made! He loves it, is able to keep more food down, and is finally growing better. I've found if he dislikes a certain veggie flavor, DS will eat it if I alternate bites with a fruit that he really likes.

  • I would nurse more if you're worried about weight. As for eating veggies, I didn't offer fruits until DD had pretty much tried all the veggies first. At 7.5 months I would try veggie/fruit mixes.

  • It's super variable--there are days where my DS will eat 2 ounces, and days where he'll eat 8.

I wouldn't worry too much about liking particular flavors, other than to keep offering and not pigeonhole a certain food just because he refuses it a few times.

DS likes the pouches with blends in them; tonight he had greek yogurt, raspberry and spinach.

  • DS is 6.5 mos and has 3 or 4 Tbsp twice a day. I've got piggies in my house. Sometimes it takes up to 10 tries for one to get used to a food. Keep offering the veggies.

  • We started DD on them around 5 months and at first only ate small amounts (maybe an oz) of fruits/veggies a day. And even hated oatmeal and rice cereal. Now she is 8 months and eats 2oz of oatmeal and 3.5oz of fruit/veggies twice a day. Plus anywhere from 21-28oz of formula a day. Holy cow she sounds like a fatty!!! Lol

As for the veggies, try offering both to her. To get DD to eat veggies I had to give her a bite of fruit and then a few bites of veggies. It gradually went to where she liked the veggies and now she gets fruit for breakfast and veggies for dinner. DD also lives the sweet potato and corn mix or the chicken and sweet potato mix. So maybe try mixing with meats too and see if that helps!

  • We do BLW, but I offer at least 2 meals a day. She is asking for more now, so I have been making an effort to do 3. She prefers savory foods and will eat almost all of what I give her if it's savory, not so much if it's something else. She also likes to just make a mess. Her nursing hasn't decreased at all. An example would be breakfast today, she was served half of a bagel with cream cheese and about 15 blueberries, she ate about 10 of the berries and about 1/4 of the bagel, but sucked off all of the cream cheese. Then after she mooched my food and tried to steal DS's cinnamon roll.

  • We started DS on purees at 6 months.  He is now 8 months old and has 2 "meals" a day.  He eats about 3oz of food at each meal.  DS loves fruits as well----  I have had to purchase the veggie packs that are masked by fruit.  Spinach / banana, pumpkin / apple, etc.

  • DD gets about 4 ounces a day and she loves everything.
  • The only tip I got about getting babiesto eat veggies is feed them veggies first.  I was told by someone (I don't even remember who now) to feed them vegetables in the morning and then fruit for lunch so that they get the sweet one later.  So far it has worked for me.
