Birth certificates and deployment

My husband is deployed and will still be deployed during the birth of our first child. I am completely unaware of the birth certificate process but I have been told the father needs to sign it for it to be official. I'm from Minnesota and states might differ but I'm worried that our child won't be able to be enrolled in DEERS and be covered for insurance. Any knowledge on the subject would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Birth certificates and deployment

  • My DH was deployed when our son was born four years ago. We lived in TN, so rules might be different, but I don't recall signing the birth certificate myself. You will need a special POA to be able to enroll your LO into DEERS. It is the same POA that you would need to be able to race your own ID card without your DH being with you. I would call the nearest DEERS office, though, get the specific information. Good luck!

  • He needs to get POA for you and you can add him to the birth cert and DEERS.  If he goes to legal and tells them they will take care of it.

  • My husband had absolutely nothing to do with the birth certificate and he was here.  He did fill it out but only because he has better handwriting.  They only needed me to sign it.  It may vary by state but my understanding is that if you are married you can put him on the birth certificate because by law he is the father (even if he isn't).  If you are not married then he has to agree that he is the father and sign it.

Neither of us had to sign a thing in Texas. I'd check with the county before assuming this is going to be a problem.
  • Neither of us had to sign anything either (we're in Kansas). I just filled out the form when I pre-registered at the hospital at 36 weeks, then when DS was born, they had typed it up on an unofficial birth certificate and made me check to make sure it was all correct.  The unofficial one DH could take to DEERS and enroll him with it, we just had to bring his ss card back to update the file when we got it in the mail.

  • Thanks for the advice! I will talk to him about the POA and check with the county about how that all works.
  • When I had my lo while DH was deployed the hospital allowed me to sign DH's name on the birth certificate before I left the hospital. In order to do this I had to provide a copy of DH orders, our marriage license, and a copy of his ID. After that with my POA I had no problem with Deers. It's been a while so this next part may be a little off but I want to say that Tricare automatically covered DS after birth for 30 days while I made time to get things in order. This is how it worked here other hospitals may be different.

  • I think it varies by state, not county for the birth certificate.  I had to fill out the paperwork in the hospital and sign it.  It asked for the father's info, but he didn't have to sign it at all, just I did.  And my H was sitting right next to me when I filled it out and still didn't have to sign.
