High chair?

Chris is going to be 4 in just under 3 months and he still takes his meals and sometimes snacks in a high chair.  He seems to genuinely enjoy sitting in it most times.  I think it's the fact that it keeps him contained and I think he likes that.  He's also prone to squeezing himself into very tight spaces or maneuvering himself behind you on a couch and asking you to squish him.

Anyway, at home and at my parents' who watch him every day, this isn't a problem, but I've noticed a couple of funny looks whenever someone is over and they see Chris get in his high chair to eat - like he's too big for it or something.  I honestly never gave it a second thought but now I'm starting to wonder if maybe we shouldn't be trying to encourage him to eat his meals in a booster seat or something similar.

Thoughts?  Advice?

Thanks!

Re: High chair?

  • Thanks auntie!  This is how I feel as well but sometimes you need an outsider's perspective.  I fully recognize that I am at times guilty of babying him too much so I just wanted to get an outside opinion.  He uses the try but I think it's mostly because we have a weird height table the the high chair can't easily be used at the table.  He likes using it for 'tablet time' too as it gives him a good surface to prop our tablet onto.

  • DD is 2.5 and still uses a HC at home, minus the tray. Structured play would be impossible without it. Her attention shifts quite frequently and the HC helps her to stay focused on what shes doing. She occasionally requests to eat at our coffee table and I indulge from time to time but that typically results in her grazing on a meal for 2 hours that she would otherwise knock out in 20 mins. I had a mommy friend whose child was 2 days older than DD but was also born 9 weeks early. He however is NT and so she side eyed everything about DD and how I "parented" her. Notice I said had.
  • Oh my I'm glad someone else is in the same boat. I was just telling OT and hubby about this the other day. That DS is 3 and still using a high chair. It's seriously the only way we can get him to eat anything. We struggle on a daily basis at meal time. So, when we tell him it's lunch or dinner, it's what he walks to. I'm just worried because DS is very territorial over his stuff and DS2 who is almost 5 months will be needing it soon as well. And we are in the same boat and eat at our island for dinner every night where a booster seat is not possible. OT told me to do what we had to do for the time being to get a meal down him.

  • We still use the high chair too. We roll it over to the TV to watch Play with me Sesame while I go up and shower. It is also used for speech therapy to keep Nate focused. Even though Nate is small and still fits it comfortably, I was also just thinking about this same thing the other day and that we should retire it......ugh.

  • DS hasn't used a high chair...ever. We only did one of the boosters up to the table. But...he still needs something besides a big chair for proper support. We have a little table and chairs from IKEA that he uses for art/etc. And at the table, we bought him a junior chair - it pushes right up to the table, but sits higher so he can access the table/food better. If I was going back and doing it again, I would have just bought a Height-Right chair https://www.amazon.com/Keekaroo-Height-Right-Chair-Natural/dp/B0044R7I00/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1376502455&sr=8-1&keywords=height+right+chair and had him use that from the beginning.
  • It's the same thing with us - as we found out the hard way last Thanksgiving - when he threw a giant fit and refused to eat dinner.  When we got back to my in-laws he made a bee-line for the high chair and proceeded to tell me he wanted a sandwich.

I will say this - he can eat breakfast and lunch anywhere else (for the most part) but it's dinner that he has to be in his high chair for.  Not sure why but I know we're going to have to stop that soon.  If he eats at any other table, we just have to keep sitting him back down because he wants to get up and run around.
