Want to make a change - wwyd?

After much diliberation I've decided that I need to make a change from the job I've been in for 8 yrs. I love what I do and love who I work for my there is 0 flexibility and the hours are just too long . I want more time with DS . I am going to look for new jobs both within and outside my industry that have more flexibility . My question is- would you ask your boss for help finding something else within the company ( I work for a large company ) or just cut the ties and quit and network elsewhere ? I have seen people make internal moves a lot and I feel like there could be a ton of options for me right here but I'm nervous and don't know how to even broach the topic. I feel like asking for something with more flexibility like working from home makes me look lazy. For context I leave my house at 545 am and get home at 6pm with an hr commute each way. I also have client events at least one night a week..

  • Only you know your boss. In that situation, I feel like I could go to my boss with that issue, especially if I had openings in mind. Do they post openings in your company? Are you sure there are more flexible opportunities in your company? My boss actually passes on my CV to my new job so in some situations it does work. But it really depends on the specific environment.

  • I'm not sure of your relationship with your boss. I would express interest in learning new areas (with current mgr and over 'new' mgr) and ask to cross train into another department. Show the benefits-back up for the person, knowledge in both areas, loyalty to the company. When a requisite becomes available you can apply for it. This will also allow you to decide if you like the position and if it's the flexibility you are seeking.

  • Honestly, what's your relationship with your boss?  I did a career change and went through my company's career mobility program.  I actually approached my boss prior to submitting anything and my boss was extremely supportive and excited for me.  Because we had such a great relationship and she was so supportive of my decision and understanding of my need for professional growth, we did everything out in the open and she even helped open some doors for me.  If she was a different type of person or we had a different relationship, it might not have worked out so well.
