Adoption

First Home Study Visit completed tonight!

It was a breeze - I really think we lucked out because our social worker's older sister was a good friend of mine in high school, so we were at ease with her from the start.  She recognized me instantly when we first met last week!  Tonight's visit was just for her to take a tour of our home, check smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, etc., and then we spent some time talking about why we wanted to adopt, what our preferences were, and how the process worked.  My individual meeting is Thursday, DH's is next week and our final home visit is 8/26, so things are progressing quickly!

  • That's AWESOME! Sprinkle some good home study dust my way :-) You've clearly got the good vibes goin'!
  • So glad you were able to be at ease during your visit. What a giant step done!
  • Hi, new here. What kinds of questions do they ask besides the obvious financials, how long you've been together, etc? TIA
  • They gave us a set of paper work and questions to answer for each visit - there is one home visit, an individual visit with each of us in the agency's office, and then another home visit.  This first visit she just took a tour of our home and then we sat down and talked about what kind of adoption we wanted (open/closed/domestic,etc), what sort of situations we are open to (birth mother situations, birth defects, mental instability, little to no medical history, how the baby was conceived - rape, incest, date rape), what our feelings were about adoption, what our family/friends felt about our decision, what experiences we had in the past with adoption, and then how the process works with their agency.  Our next home visit will cover financial issues, working with our child about adoption, child care plan, guardianship plan, and discipline. In the individual visit we talked about our relationship, our childhood, our relationship with friends & family, our parenting philosophy, etc.
