Worst day ever- Interview Vent

I had a phone interview today, and was asked about my salary requirement.  I was totally caught off guard and undervalued myself to the point that I'm wondering if it's even worthwhile to take the job if offered to me.  Considering my qualifications and the pitiful salary I offered, I'm fairly sure I'll get the job.

Meanwhile, my boss has put in a good word for me (I'm a temp for her currently), and the commute is perfect. This was my dream job, and when I first researched the salary over a week ago, I was pleased to learn it would be a significant step up for me.  Meanwhile, I was so focused on the position and my strategy of selling myself that I didn't even consider my salary and I flubbed the whole thing.

Is there any way I could come back from this?

  • I don't think it is a big deal. Was it close to what you had researched? That is probably what they will offer. A decent sized company is not going to set salaries based on candidates answers to that question. If not, you can counter their offer and just say, "after some research, I feel that XXX is more appropriate....."

  • I agree if you get the offer you could ask a few questions about benefits and such then say that after considering everything you would require X as a salary. The number you put out there on the phone was just the minimum you would consider and most companies already have a range set for each position. They aren't likely to lower that range drastically for one person just because they think you'll take it. It would lead to problems later if coworkers of similar experience and responsibility started at a much higher salary just because that's the number they threw out in their first interview.

  • Don't worry about it.  If they give you a low offer, you can counter and say, "I consider the total compensation package when evaluating the offer.  With this salary, I would expect a signing bonus, additional vacation time, etc etc.  Let's talk about bringing the total compensation to a value that reflects my experience as well as the average salary for this position, whether by increasing the salary or adding to other parts of the compensation package."

This, if anything they might have just been trying to rule out that you were asking for something above what they could offer.
