Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Hours of sleep...for baby..

How many hours of sleep is your baby getting a day? How much are they supposed to get by 6 months? My daughter sleeps about 13-14 hours a day, including night and naps? Should she be getting more sleep?

Re: Hours of sleep...for baby..

  • I think DD gets about 13-14 hours a day as well.  Interested to see what others say.  I just looked it up and Web MD and Baby Center say 14-15 hours.

  • I think average from 6-9 months is around 14 hours.  DD's sleep has been about the same since 6 months (currently 8.5 months).  She STTN 7pm-6:30am (roughly), and takes 2-3 naps (totaling roughly 2-3 hours per day).  So we're hovering right around 14 I think.
  • She gets about 10 a night and 3-4 hours through the day for naps. So, about 13-14 hours.
  • It seems like we are all around the same amount! :) I just wanted to make sure that we were getting enough sleep! Im glad everyone's babies are in the same range. It makes me nervous because I have friends who are so strict about there babies naps. I try to be, but my daughter sleeps better at night than during the day. : /

DS sleeps about 11 hours at night, and takes about 2 1-2 1/2 hour naps a day. So probably about anywhere from 14-15 hours a day. He's also 8 months

Exactly the same for my 7.5 month old DD, also.
DS (7 years old) from FET in 2010
DD (5 years old) from IUI in 2012
TTC 3rd and final!: IUI #1 in progress!
  • My DD gets roughly that if not more, and she is 6 months. She usually sleeps from 9pm-10am with only one interruption during the night, usually to be changed and given a bottle. Then she takes usually 1 or 2 naps totaling about 1 1/2-2 hrs each. Occasionally she gets more when she wants to be put down before 9, though.

  • DS just turned 6 months and he gets 13-14 hours of sleep as well. I think we're all in the realm of normal!!

  • It's not the length of the sleep but the quality. If you aren't getting long naps then is can be harmful to their emotional, physical and cognitive development.

This might scare some people. I might be misreading what you are saying as in hours or length, but some babies are cat nappers and that is perfectly ok. My son was a cat napper for the first 8 months - only sleeping 30 minutes at a time and he was ahead in every milestone emotionally, physically and cognitively. Our pedi said not to worry. He just took extra naps. He is just now transitioning to longer naps.
Sept 2013 started TTC#2 (never got PP period so hoping for the first egg to drop)
Jan 2014 - diagnosed POF (Premature Ovarian Failure) and told pregnancy not possible without egg donor because my ovaries would never function again with my hormone levels (FSH 136, LH 98.6, AMH <.03, estradiol 0, HCG 7) - using acupuncture, chiropractic care and TCM herbs / supplements
March 11, 2014 ovulated despite every doctors prognosis!!!
Oct 2014 hormones (FSH 48, Estradiol 89, HCG 1) not good, but heckuva lot better!

Nov. 16, 2015 FET of single adopted 5AA embryo - BFN

I agree. I was very concerned with DD's cat napping habit, but my pedi just said some people have different sleep patterns than others, so not to worry. She gets roughly 14-15 hours of sleep per day, including bedtime. PP is right, the quality of the sleep needs to be good, but you can definitely get a good nap in in 30 minutes. Whether they're cat naps or power naps, as long as they're sound, it should be fine, especially if night time sleep is ok. I think some babies are just more distractible during the day is all.
  • N gets 14-15 hours of sleep per day.  He is 8 1/2 months old.

He sleeps 11-12 hours at night and his 2 naps are usually right around 1 1/2 hours each.

I agree with you ladies. I also expressed concern to my pediatrician about DS's short naps and she was pretty much like "Eh, they'll consolidate eventually." She was more concerned about night sleep than naps.

That's what my doctor kept saying every time I brought it up.  Sleeping through the night is the goal, catnaps are not harmful.  Rest assured, my DD was catnapping and she is now taking 1 1/2 to 2 hour long naps.  Consolidation will happen!
