Which carrier?

I am so overwhelmed with the different baby carriers out there!  Baby Bjorn, Ergo, etc etc!  I want a more structured carrier, as my husband would like the option to use it as well.  Tell me your recommendations!

Re: Which carrier?

  • Ergo so worth the money!

  • I do not recommend the Bjorn.

I have an ergo, a moby, and a ring sling. Next time around I'm adding a mei tei. Have fun shopping!!
  • I love my K'Tan soft carrier and the Beco Gemini.  The Gemini is so much easier to put on thanv the ergo, and baby can face out comfortably.

  • I second the Gemini. We used a Solly Baby Wrap when he was smaller (similar to Moby but lighter weight fabric which is great for New Orleans heat) and now use the Gemini. We love it since it's easy to put on, DS can face in or out and will eventually be able to go on our backs, plus it's easily adjustable between my 6'3"DH and my 5' self.

There's a lot of posts about this, but to minimize the overwhelmingness, why not start with the standard Baby Bjorn, which is cheap, well-liked by men, and pretty easy to use when baby is little. Chances are, someone will give you one as a gift anyways. Then, by the time your baby gets heavier and your back starts to get sore, you will have a better idea of your baby-wearing style and what you'd want in your dream carrier. (Then go buy the Beco Gemini ;) )
  • The Baby Bjorn is not cheap at $80-$100 a pop.  The Gemini costs $130, Ergo $115-150 depending on the one you like.

  • The Tula is my favorite carrier, similar style to the ergo, but more comfortable. And a ring sling for when they are smaller.

I had the Moby for newborn stage and the Ergo as DS grew.  If I could do it all over again, I'd scratch the Moby and just get the Ergo with the infant insert.  Love the Ergo!  The only downside is that he can't be forward facing.

  • Before you jump into any carriers, look at the arguments for and against certain ones. I know a lot of people won't use Bjorn because of the way the baby sits. Something about their knees being lower than their hips and hip dysplasia or something like that. From what I've read, baby is best in a frog position. Many of these carriers dont account for that.
  • I have a moby and love it but it does take time to put on ( I'm a bit OCD so everything has to be spread out evenly ) . I recently got the new Becco Soleil and LOVE it!!! It's also ergonomic so good for the baby and whoever is wareing it. It can't foreword face which is fine with me . It's like the ergo but the shoulder straps can cross in the back which I find more comfy and there not as padded . I found the ergos straps too padded for my liking and they sat to far down on my shoulders where I felt they were falling off where as the Becco sits closer to my neck . This carrier also has a built in cell phone pocket or you could put a small wallet in there and two toy rings to attach things too. You do need a separate infant insert but its super easy to use . There's also the option for a carry all bag you can purchase that can hold diapers wipes and some other things that attaches to the carrier so you don't have to fiddle with a diaper bag. It's and awesome carrier . I did allot of research before I landed on this one and I'm super happy with the purchase !!
  • I would recommend trying on the carriers before you decide on which one to get (if possible). Most specialty baby stores will allow you to try on the carrier to see which one feels more comfortable before you purchase. A lot of the carriers fit differently based on your height. A friend gave me the Ergo as a baby shower gift but when I tried it on, I hated it. The straps dug in under my arms and it felt really uncomfortable. She is 5 ft 8 inches and she loved it but I'm 5 ft 2 inches so it fit very differently on me. I ended up getting the Beco Gemini because it felt more comfortable and I liked how the straps cross at the back. I have upper back issues and my chiropractor recommended a carrier with straps that cross. Hope this helps!

  • I have an Ergo Sport (from DD) and a Baby K'tan.  New with DS.  The baby K'tan seemed fine, but started hurting my back after awhile.  And DS is very hit or miss whether he likes it.   The fabric also slips off my shoulders sometimes, and I bought the xs.

The Ergo is cumbersome to put on IMO and DD didn't really like it that much.  I think she would have preferred to see out.  I haven't tried it yet with DS.  He's 12 lbs but only 5 weeks.

I'm going to look into the Gemini for our upcoming Disney trip.  Also I really need something for around the house.
