I need newborn size clothes right?

Everyone says "don't buy newborn size" when you have a singleton since they are usually only in it for a few weeks. DD was 7.11 and we had to go out and get her  a few newborn sleepers because most everything we had was big early on.

Since twins are typically smaller, do you recommend we get a get base of newborn onesies and sleepers? Wont 0-3 or even 3 months onesies be swimming on even and 6 pounder?

Re: I need newborn size clothes right?

  • Yes to NB. I plan on getting some preemie stuff too. DS1 was 5.12 lbs when he was born & swam in his NB outfit.

  • My first two never wore NB but my twins girls are just barely out growing NB size at 7 weeks. They were 7lbs 7oz and 6lbs 5oz at birth.
  • My boys were 6lbs 7oz and 6lbs 3oz at birth, and wore NB clothes for 8 weeks. Definitely worth having a base in that range.

  • I bought a few preemie stuff as well, but in consignment just in case. If they end up not needing it, I didn't spend much on it, but I have a feeling they'll need the preemie size because they are both measuring small.

  • I have been gifted new and used clothing in all sizes but newborn. I guess I'm going to have to go buy some!

  • Yes. My boys were 5lbs and 5lbs 8oz and after coming home from the NICU at 2 weeks old were in preemie for another two weeks and are still in NB three weeks later. We still have another two to three weeks in NB if I had to guess.

  • I just went through their clothes last weekend and realized I have a ton of 0-3 month clothes but only 8 newborn sleepers (so 4 each) and 2 premie outfits. I guess I will also be searching for some smaller clothes.

My girls, at 3 weeks, are still small in NB, but preemie was getting tight. I'm guessing they are both about 6 or 6.5 lbs now. Bit you don't need a ton of anything - we just did laundry ED or EOD

  • One more question for you along the same lines:

I want to order on Etsy two personalized hats with the girls names on them for them to wear in the hospital (once they have names). Should I order preemie size or newborn?

Sizes included: Preemie (4-6 pounds), Newborn (6-8 pounds) 0-3 (greater than 8 pounds).

  • For sure get newborn stuff.  My first kid was a 10 pounder at birth and only fit his two little NB outfits for less than a week.  These two were on the large side for twins - 7.12 and 7.2 - and at almost 8 weeks they are FINALLY starting to outgrow the NB size but 0-3 is still huge in some brands.  I wish I'd bought more small stuff, as everyone who gifted us clothes gave 6-9m, and I don't have a lot of small hand-me-downs from my son.

  • Ditto everyone else.  You may even want to have a few preemie outfits on hand too.  My boys wore NB until they were over 5 months old.

Ditto the other ladies. Definitely have some newborn stuff on hand. My two were 7lbs 12 oz. and 6lbs 5 oz. and they were each in newborn for at least 1-2 months. Even my singleton, who was 6lbs 11 oz. was in newborn for a while. We had two preemie sleepers for each (one set was a gift and one we purchased) and we didn't need either one.

ETA: I'd get the newborn sized hat. My girl had a big head and never would have fit the preemie hat.

  • We had a 'Loved Baby' gift of newborn onsies and they were the only thing that was small enough to go home from the hospital (babies were 6/9 and 5/15). If you get preemie items, leave the tags on in case you don't need them. We have kept our summer babies in just a diaper or swaddled most days so we really haven't needed much newborn stuff.
  • It's all about height. My boys could still fit in NB based on their weight at 5mo old... but they were too tall for them at 1mo old. James dropped down to 4lbs 12oz before we left the hospital but he was still too tall to straighten his legs in the preemie clothes.

I hadn't thought of that. The tech today was commenting on how long A is. He may not fit in that itty bitty preemie sleeper I was planning to bring him home in. Gowns may be okay though.

  • My girls were full term and 6 lbs 13 oz and 6 lbs 9 oz. They wore NB clothes for almost 3 mos.
