Straining to poop

DS has really been straining to poop lately, and they've been really large and solid. It's only been the past few weeks when we've switched from just purées and milk to real food mixed in. DS sometimes strains multiple times during the day and doesn't go, and then finally will push a big one out and sometimes even cries. I try to give him prunes or pears once a day and some water, but nothing seems to be helping. Do you think I should call my pedi or is this normal?

Re: Straining to poop

  • It doesn't hurt to call if you're concerned. I called my dr about the straining and consistency, which was like a ball of playdoh. She said he is learning how to go with this different kind of poop. As long as it isn't hard or bloody she wasn't concerned.

  • How much prune/pear are you giving? We've been giving DD a spinach & potato puree but I think the spinach is too tough on her belly right now so I'm going to hold off on giving her it again for another few weeks. I usually give her a little less than 1 ounce of prunes a day and I'll probably give her 1 extra ounce today because she hasn't pooped in 2 days, I think because of the spinach.
