Babies: 6 - 9 Months

baby babble

My lo is pretty vocal but is not making the typical "mama, gaga, baba" sounds. He is not using any consonants. He is 7 months old as of 2 days ago. I am not worried since he is very vocal but I am curious at what point do I need to mention to the doctor/be concerned.

Re: baby babble

  • I can't say when you need to be concerned, but my daughter was the same, and she just started doing the "bababa" the other day at 8 months.  And now she says it all day long lol.

I don't think they are supposed to say their first words until 12 months so you are good.
  • I've been wondering the same thing since ds was babbling by this point, but like your LO dd is VERY vocal (too much so, lol). Anyhow, we are just now starting to hear a ba sound and a mmm sound, just not strung together yet. So it's coming.

  • DD has been saying the dada sound since about 5 months and that's all she was saying for the longest time, now she is starting to babble more with more sounds and she doesn't stop once she starts haha DH calls her a Chatty Cathy

  • Thanks ladies!
  • My DD just turned 6 months, and she has been trying to babble for about a month now. About a week ago she started being ver chatty and now "talks" to us, but still doesn't really string together her consonants. (Eg: No bababa or gagaga yet) But she will occasionally go "ba" or "ga" when talking/squealing and she frequently giggles. I'm not worried yet.

Also I have been told if your LO is a preemie, they're like to take a bit longer to do things. This is another reason I'm not yet worried as my DD was born at 36 weeks. I think she's progressing well, and doesn't seem to be behind yet.

Unless it is concerning you, I wouldn't worry. Most babies do things in their own time. I have to remind myself that a lot as my DD isn't even sitting up by herself yet.
  • DD is developing her motor skills like crazy and her vocal skills seem to be taking a back seat to that, she "oohs" and "aahs" sometimes but that's just about it. I'm not worried at all. Maybe at the 9 month appointment if DD isn't making any progress I might bring it up but I won't be calling about it before then.
  • We just had our 9 month pedi appt yesterday and it was on the 9 month ASQ (or whatever it's called) asking if they use certain consonants like baba and dada etc. My LO didn't really start til 8 months so I wouldn't be concerned. It's not a concern til closer to 12 months.
