Introduction. Newly Diagnosed w/ Severe Nut Allergy

Hello.  I posted on here about two weeks ago about my DD and her splotchy back and some hives.  We had our allergy testing done yesterday and was diagnosed with a severe nut allergy (my allergist used the words "life threatening" which scared me even more.)  DD is allergic to tree nuts and peanuts, along with garlic, (odd in my mind) and dust.  I am feeling overwhelmed, scared, and sad, but am looking for resources and support.   I have purged the house of anything with nuts, made in a facility that uses nuts, or is labeled as may contain trace amounts of nuts.  I have gotten my epi's, and am educating my big kids on the risks involved and how our little world has changed.  If anyone has any advice, or web-sites they use i would love if you shared.  Thanks.

  • Thank you!  Yes, I was concerned about a soy allergy, but she didn't test positive for soy.  We are going all natural as a household to see if that clears up her splotchy back.  I registered on and have been reading a lot on the Kids with Food Allergies web-site, and have talked to a couple of my close friends who are also dealing with serious nut allergies.  My biggest concern is not being able to trust the food labels.  How do others deal with that?

  • Sorry to hear about your DD's allergy news.  I found out at 13 months DS had a life threatening peanut allergy after a reaction he had and it was awful.  Seeing him have another reaction a couple of weeks ago with has brought me to tears on an ongoing basis.  He had a cookie with walnuts and despite being told after testing he was not allergic to tree nuts he went into anaphylatic shock.  We don't know if it was cross-contaminated or he has now developed an allergy to tree nuts.  Regardless we'll be staying away from all nuts in the future.  I'm sure part of my emotional rollercoaster right now is pregnancy hormones, but it's just a horrible thing to watch your child go into anaphylatic shock and I can't get it out of my head.

Our allergist recommended reading the Peanut Allergy Answer book.  It did answer some of my questions, but there are just too many questions left unanswered by the medical profession as a whole (why are there more food allergies nowadays, is there anything that can be done to prevent it during pregnancy, nursing, etc.).

    *Hugs* to you.

  • You've gotten some helpful advice from pp's. I would just add that you might look into getting an allergy bracelet to help remind others about LO's allergies. We have an Allermates bracelet for DD1 and we will be getting one for DD2 soon.
