Vacation with 2 under 2?

We have 5 month and 17 month old.. I booked 3 days at oceancity md for a vacation/hotel has kiddy pool and also on the beach - I also got a suite with kitchen etc. However some have given "advice" not to go / they are too young /6 hour drive too long and DH AND I will be exhausted from taking care of them and not a "vacation" etc bc baby too young for beach... Please give honest advice and opinions do I cancel... I only have 48 hours to do so.. I would hate to get there and have my husband be miserable with all the crying etc. Thanks so much!

Re: Vacation with 2 under 2?

  • IMO, go if you feel like your up for it, need it and think it is what your family needs. Having gone on several trips to visit family with just DS (now 20 mos), both DH and I have determined not to spend lots of money on actual vacations for awhile, since we don't feel we'd be able to enjoy it to the extent we'd want to between nap times, adjusting to surroundings, etc. But, it's what you guys feel works for your family, and if you think it's going to work, then go for it!

I don't have 2u2, but we didn't stop vacationing because we had kids. No, it's not relaxing, no, it's not the same as pre-kid trips, but it can still be a lot of fun if you plan well and have reasonable expectations. I think 3 days is a little short for a 6 day drive - is that 2 nights or 3 nights? So, I might add an extra day or 2 if possible.
I agree with this.  I had 2U2 by only a week or so but we never stopped vacationing.  I even go on vacations alone with the two kids when DH goes on long business trips.  It is not the same as pre-kids, but it is doable and can still be fun if you don't place your expectations too high.

  • Go! The beach is the perfect place. 6 Hours is not bad either, I do suggest maybe the parent not driving sit in the back with the kids though, I find this reduces stops. You planned great as for Hotel it seems so go, just have different expectations--sorry it wont be drinks and naps by the pool ;) The kids will have a blast, lets be honest no vacation will be the same but they're great in a new way seeing your kids explore!

  • we just got back from vacation with our 14 month old and 3 year old.  I find when I sit in the back seat my LO gets very fussy because he wants to be held.  I would bring a cooler back with packed bottles of milk.  We just did a 3 hour drive and coming home the baby did go through 2 bottles, there's nothing much to do when they get fussy other than give them a bottle.  I'd also aim to travel during a meal and nap/night, that way your older one can keep busy eating and sleeping.
  • just read you're thinking of canceling.  We did spend alot of time in our hotel, and even more so last year because DD, then 2, wouldn't sleep on the beach and was taking 3 hour naps during the day.  This year we were in the room by 8 because the kids would get cranky.  We go with my inlaws, their kids are very unstructured, stay up late, sleep or don't sleep when they want.  They're out till 9 or 10 every night.  If your kids are flexible and will nap in the stroller or on the beach you could have a really nice time.  I don't think I'd cancel, if anything I would also add another night or two.
  • I do agree, travel if possible during nap/night time. We hit the lull of the highway and my LO crashes :)

  • We have just adopted two.  Our kids are
    DD1 is 7 and a half
    DD2 will be 6 on August 22th
DS (adopted yesterday) is two and a half
DD3 is going to be one on August 20th
DD4 (adopted yesterday) turned six months yesterday.
We travel every few months.  We live in Miami, but are Canadian.  We have been in Canada for most of the Summer.  We went with a group of 21 people to Italy for two weeks in July.  Staying in a hotel was pretty easy.  The youngest two were in pack n plays and DS shared a bed with me.  Most of the people on this trip were 15 and under.  It is doable.  I don`t road trip it, I always fly, so no help on driving, but I would say go and have fun!!
