Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Baby Led Weaning

Hey Mommas!!
(sorry if this question has already been asked!)
I am also a February Mommy and just rejoined since being pregnant! I am curious how many of you are doing baby led weaning, and how it is going for your  babes? I want to start so bad, but I am so scared my daughter is going to choke! Please Help!

Re: Baby Led Weaning

  • I do it. Honestly, they gag far more than they choke. It's a natural defense mechanism to prevent choking, and they'll make plenty of sounds. DD2 has not actually choked once since we started at 6 months. Check out the site, read the book if you want, just get knowledge and do what works for you and your LO.

  • I found it very calming and informative to read the book "Baby Led Weaning" by Gil Rapley. It is a must-read if you are looking to do BLW.
  • I was a little freaked out at first too. We do modified BLW where I still feed DS oatmeal mixed with fruit puree for breakfast & then he gets some of whatever we eat later on for dinner. So it's kind of half and half.

What eased my mind a bit is how you give the food to them. We started with strips of food - cucumber, steak, sweet potato, etc. This way it's easy for them to hold and it allows them to gnaw and bite off what they want.

There will be some gagging (which looks like choking) but we haven't had any issues yet. Even now that he is fine-tuning his "pincher" grasp and is having smaller bits of food.

Just do what you're comfortable with!

  • We've done BLW since DD was one week shy of 6 months.  She has never actually choked, but has done plenty of gagging (especially in the first few weeks).  I definitely agree with PP about reading the BLW book - it will answer your questions and make you feel better about the entire process.  I LOVE that we chose to do BLW, and that I don't have to take time out of my day to make separate food/spoon-feed LO.  And watching her experiment with different textures and flavors is lots of fun :)
  • Great! thanks ladies! I'm getting the book today!! Don't the gagging sounds scare you? I guess I'll get used to it? I really want to do this though! :)

  • We did it with DD and will with DS too. For sure read the book so you don't panic when they gag occasionally. It really isn't all the time, and it doesn't seem to bother them at all. When they get older they'll gag up a piece of food that was too big, spit it out, the grab it right back and stuff it back in! Eventually they simply just learn to take manageable bites. After about 8 months old with DD she never gagged at all.

We let DS have some cucumber today, this was his very first time eating. Here's his video. I'm totally AW'ing this since I just linked it to my facebook and had the link handy.

  • DD has only gagged twice- and both times were in a restaurant and she gagged to the point of spitting up...but it wasn't that bad and she loves eating what we're eating (she gets very impatient if you eat a bite before you give her some). My mom has given her yogurt, oatmeal, and jarred pears and while she'll eat them, she doesn't enjoy that near as much as she does holding and "chewing" (she has no teeth yet) her own food.
