STMs- rec your baby carrier

So I never used a carrier or wrap w/ DD. Did try a BabyBjorn, which she hated. But I think having a wrap this time so my hands can be free to chase around DD would work out nicely. So what did you like? Disclaimer: I am kind of a spaz, I don't know if I can handle a wrap that is super complicated to put on.

Re: STMs- rec your baby carrier

  • I never used a wrap (looking into that for this one) but I did really love my Beco Gemini. I started off with the Ergo, which was OK but a bit cumbersome for me (you have to clip it behind your back).

  • I have the baby bjorn and really loved it. We used a moby when she was really little like until 5mos or 6 mos I think. It worked really well. It isn't too bad if you watch a youtube video on how to wrap it. After the second or third time it became easy and second nature.

  • I have a beco Gemini but prefer my ergo even though I do like the Gemini. I would recommend looking at them in person before deciding if at all possible.

I tried the moby, but didn't like it.  I think this time I might buy that cheap infantaio wrap that has a waistband.

I used an Ergo from pretty early one with the insert, then with just the pillow to bump him up, then with out.  I still use it now in the back carry.

I recently bought a ring-sling because I wanted something easier than the Ergo for a hip carry.   I really like it for grocery shopping.  He turns kind forward from the hip carry and he helps me push the cart.  (I'm short. . . so I suppose it wouldn't work that way with a tall person.)  Wish I'd tried the sling as an infant- looking forward to trying it with this one.

Oh-  I also tried an knock-off type baby bjorn that I got leant from a friend.  LO did not like it and I wasn't all that comfortable in it either.

  • I had a Boba wrap to start, which is the same as a moby, but I think the fabric may be a bit thicker.  It was great when DS was a newborn, and after you put it on a few times, it's a piece of cake.  If you find a store in your area that specializes in carriers, they will be able to show you how to wrap.

We also have an Ergo, which I love.  IT's very supportive and I have zero back pain with it.

If you end up getting a soft structured carrier (like ergo or one with padding and buckles) just make sure it has a wide crotch area so that it actually supports your baby's weight and doesn't just dangle them.

  • I love my Ergo, We also used a moby in the very early days, I was still using my Ergo with my son in a back carry up until about 3 weeks ago, H wears Him now, I could have continued but it was starting to hurt my pelvis and stomach to have all that extra pressure there.

  • I tried a wrap and it worked while DS was very little, but I didn't use it for very long.  I wouldn't recommend a sling, I hated the one I got.  I eventually ended up with the Ergo baby carrier and LOVE it.  I plan on buying the infant insert for this little one

  • An Ergo is easy to use and much better and comfortable for you and LO than a Bjorn. Wraps are easy once you get the hang of it, but maybe see if you and LO like babywearing first. A ring sling might be a good starting point for you as well.

  • I love my Ergo.  DD still fits well in it and it's super comfortable.  I borrowed a Moby and a Baby Bjorn from my SIL and didn't like either.  The Moby was just too complicated for me (I'm way too impatient to deal with all the folding/wrapping) and the Bjorn was ridiculously uncomfortable... killed my back after just a few minutes.

  • I am a TFM, but have done TONS of research and asked all my friends. THe number one recommended ones to me were the Baby Ktan for a wrap, and the Beco for a sturdier one. But almost everyone gives the disclaimer that everyone and every baby is different. Also, my friends recommended not getting a sturdier one right away (like the ergo, bjorn, beco), but waiting til baby is a bit older - a few months - so you can buy one based on their preferences and comfort.

  • I got a Bjorn from a friend and it was so uncomfortable. I started using an Ergo around 4months and love it! I would recommend seeing if you have a baby wearing group by you to try some out.

  • I totally loved my Maya Wrap ring sling. It's so easy to put on and really snuggled DD when she was tiny. I preferred wearing her that way to the Ergo when she was that small, the infant insert is bulky and really warm. We still used the ring sling up to about 9 months for quick trips like the grocery store. And it's easy to nurse with it on.

  • Maya wrap until he got too big, now we use the Beco Butterfly. Had the Moby and it didn't work for us.

  • I have a ktan for when babys tiny and a baby hawk for later. I love them both.
  • DS never liked the Moby, but I'll try again w/ this LO. He loved and we still often use the Ergo - both DH and I like it too. We use it for both front and back carry. There can be a learning curve w/ getting it on by yourself w/ a LO, especially for a back carry, but once you get the hang of it, it is a breeze.

I LOVE my woven wrap for the newborn onto toddler stage, however there is a learning curve when it comes to wrapping. However, once you learn the basic carriers it is second nature.

Moby is great for the newborn stage. You can wrap yourself and then put the baby in. It is really simple once you learn how to use it and it is nice and snuggly.

For SSC for comfort for both you and your LO I would recommend something that is ergonomically sound. Brands like Boba, Tula, Kinderpack, and Ergo are good choices. However, you may have issues with comfort between each of these carriers. It is best to find a local babywearing group in your area to see if you can try these before buying.

  • I used a Moby for ds and just acquired a ring sling that I have used for him a little. I'm thinking of getting an ergo, Tula, or becco as well, but they are more of an investment. I also used an infantino hip rider that I picked up at a garage sale once my son was bigger. It worked great for him because he doesn't settle for long periods of time.
  • I have a ring sling that I never figured out--she screamed like crazy whenever I tried to put her in it. I think I'll try a Mody or K'Tan for this one. I also have a Becco Butterfly that we like. I thought we'd do a lot more baby wearing with DD than we did, but I'm expecting that with this one we will need it even more.

  • As the ladies on here have said, it really is different for everyone (and also how you're built). I have my eye on a few different ones, and DH and I are going to a babywearing workshop at a local natural baby store this Sunday to see which ones fit each of us best. I'd suggest looking for something similar in your area, so you can try before you buy (or register)!

DH wants the Baby Bjorn Active and we also registered for a Moby. Being a FTM I'm hoping our LO will at least like one of them. @nickichan any thoughts on the active?
Bjorn's have received many negative reviews from the babywearing community as stating that they are 'crotch danglers' like PP have stated. They do not give enough seat base to make the carrier comfortable for the wearer and also there has been links, but not enough research to say these are unsafe, that 'crotch danglers' have issues with hip development. (https://www.hipdysplasia.org/developmental-dysplasia-of-the-hip/prevention/baby-carriers-seats-and-other-equipment/) These carriers are not necessarily unsafe, they are just uncomfortable after very short wears. Like I said in my previous post, I would recommend a ergonomic carrier to provide longevity and also comfort for both your baby and yourself. Most mothers who come in with Bjorn complain about back pain and about to give up babywearing all together, until they try a more ergonomic carrier that provides a nice wide seat base for the baby. You want to have a carrier with knee to knee support and have the knees above the hips, like the babies is making a M with their body around you. If I was going to invest funds into a babycarrier I would invest in something with a wider seat base then the Baby Bjorn. Brands like: Tula, Boba, Ergo, Kinderpack, Becco, Onya are some good SSC brands that offer ergonomic seat base.

Edit: We really like our Toddler Tula because it gives complete knee to knee support which provides amazing comfort for the wearer. In this picture on the left DS is 15months in a Boba 3g and doesn't give full knee support but it is a more ergonomic carrier and has a wide base. With the Tula, you can see that he is completely knee to knee in the seat, which provides a deeper seat for DS and also puts the support evenly distributed by the wears straps. DS on the right is 21months.
