Non-bio moms breastfeeding

This may have been brought up on this board before but I haven't seen anything about this since I started on here. Are there any non-bio mom's who have sucessfully breastfeed through the use of hormones? We have talked about this but was curious if anyone has actually done it.

Re: Non-bio moms breastfeeding

  • I have not done it but I'm planning to try! I would also love to hear if anyone here has tried. If all goes well with our first ultrasound ill probably make an appt to get on birth control to start :)
My name is A, I am wife to J.  After 7 months of ttc and one MC, we are expecting two baby girls in 2014!

  • I'm on the same page here! Since now we are switching carriers and C is not at all interested in doing the breastfeeding. I have read some pretty discouraging things online but hoping to hear some positive success stories!

  • If M gets pregnant first, I really want to do supplementary breastfeeding!
    ****loss discussed*****

We're queer. I'm 33, have severe stage 4 endo, and had both fallopian tubes removed. My love ("Manada" on the boards, 32) was diagnosed with diminished ovarian reserve. We did Partner IVF (my eggs, her uterus). We lost our twins Tavin and Casey at 21 weeks gestation.

    Our IUIs
with @Manada: IUI# 1-7 (December 2012- September 2013) all BFN. Tried natural, femara, clomid, puregon/follistim, clomid and menopur combo, both the ovidrel and HCG triggers.

    Our IVFs:
IVF #1 my eggs November/December 2013: Cancelled IVF due to poor response

    IVF #2 my eggs/Manada's uterus January/February 2014
BCPs and lupron overlap Stimmed: 1/22-2/2: Bravelle and Menopur (dosage ranged from B300 and M150 to B375 and M150 to B300 and M225)
2/4 retrieved 10 eggs. Endo was much worse than expected. Only 3 eggs fertilized; February 7 transferred two day 3 embryos, froze one. All great condition.
    BFP eve of 6dp3dt; Beta 1 (11dp3dt): 110; Beta 2 (13dp3dt): 175; Beta 3 (15dp3dt): 348; Beta 4 (19dp3dt): 2222; Beta 5 (21dp3dt): 4255
    1st ultrasound (3/6  6w 1d): TWINS!!!! Twin A measuring 6w1d with a heartbeat of 118bpm. Twin B measuring 6w0d with a heartbeat of 113bpm.

***July 18, 2014 we lost our beautiful babies at 21 weeks gestation. They were born too early. Tavin Sara T. and Casey Elizabeth T. are beautiful and precious and we will love them and miss them forever.***

    FET #1 December 2014
Intralipid infusion on Dec 10. Transfer of 1 day 3 nine-cell embryo into my uterus on Dec. 19. (acupuncture immediately before and after)

  • It is possible, but it takes time and patience.  And a whole lot of nipple stimulation.  I researched it myself (and found some very... weird... kinky things) and it turns out you can force your body to produce milk.  Adoptive mothers sometimes wish to breastfeed, so they have good resources out there.  And even if you do give birth I've heard breastfeeding takes a lot of practice and patience before you "get it right."  I really, really want to breastfeed so I've been doing plenty of research on it.  Your wife's lactation consultant can probably help you out too.
  • Has anyone checked out any books on this topic? I know leche league has one for adopting parents but wasn't sure if anyone has found any good resources!

Here's a Wikihow article I found.  La Leche League is also a great place to look.  I'm sure a lactation consultant can help, too.  Happily this is something you can trick your body into doing.

  • I read a blog from a lesbian couple where both parents breastfed their babies (they each gave birth to one).

From what I gathered from the blog - it was way easier for the parent who had already given birth (to the first baby) to stimulate milk production for their second, but the commitment, time and effort required for the non-birth parent to produce milk for their first baby was a huge burden.  I believe she ended up quitting early on when she realized the time she needed to spend pumping to stimulate lactation was actually getting in the way of the time she could be spending bonding with the baby in other ways.

That said - I do know of a couple where the non-birth parent was a supplemental breastfeeder for their twins.   I think for them this was actually really helpful because, while she never produced enough to feed even one child enough per feeding, she was able to be there to help out when they were juggling the babies in the early days.  She also already had small amounts of milk produced when the babies were born so she could feed them a little right away before the birth mother's milk fully came in.

  • I have been looking into this for a few years, and since we got our BFP it has become a reality.  I have talked with many lactation consultants.  Right now, I have just been working on pumping.  My goal has been once a day, even though it's recommended to pump every 3 hours, and once at night.  That kind of scared me off for a bit.  I am planning to do it without taking the BC pills because shifting hormones medicinally freaks me out, plus I am already on medications that I have to take (another reason why I have been working closely with lactation consultants).  At this point, with the baby coming any day, there is no way milk would come in even if I was pumping all the time.  I bought an SNS device (supplemental nursing system).  It's basically a pouch that you can put milk in (that your partner would pump out) and tubes that tape on your breasts so the baby is actually getting the milk from the pouch but stimulating your breasts at the same time, which should help getting your own milk to come in.  Love that so many of us are interested in it!!  =)
