Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Baby Girl Clothing Size Estimates around 5 Months...

Ok, I know this is impossible to know for sure... but we had our baby girl July 22 - she weighed 8 lbs 1oz and was 20 1/2 inches long...

My question is this... we are taking a trip to Florida in December (she will be almost 5 months old when we are there) and I would LOVE to buy some clearance summer clothes for the trip - and ESPECIALLY a swimsuit now since they will be impossible to find in Ohio around that time. Does anyone have ANY estimate about what size she will wear around that time? I'm totally willing to buy a couple and return what doesn't fit later.... but I just have no idea. Hoping some "non-first time moms" with babies currently this age can shed some light into what I can expect.
  Thanks in advance!!!

Oh, also she is currently still fitting into newborn clothes just fine....and will be 3  weeks on Monday...

  • That's so hard to tell. DS was a skinny newborn and now he's massive. Depending on the brand, he fits anywhere from 3-12 months stuff

  • Yeah, this really depends on the kid. We're solidly in 3-6 month stuff, but I know other people who are in 6-9 or 6-12 month right now. We didn't move up to 0-3 until close to 2 months and 3-6 until 4 months. If it's something you really won't be able to find then, like a bathing suit, and it's clearance, I would honestly just buy a couple of different sizes.

  • Where in Florida are you visiting. I'm from Florida (moved here from ohio) and December is still pretty cool. Even when I first moved here I wore jeans and long sleeves most days while the locals were in winter coats, scarves and gloves.

  • My guy was 7 lbs 13 oz at birth and wears 3-6 months at 3 months, but can also wear some 6-9 month stuff. So many things I bought in advance never got worn. I think it's hard to say what size you'll need.
  • DD1 and DD2 were both wearing 6-9 months clothes at 5 months. DD1 was 17 1/2 lbs and 28" then; DD2 was 17 1/2 lbs and 27". That's just under 90th percentile for weight and 98th/>99th for height. (They were 9 lbs 2oz/22" and 9 lbs 4oz/21.5" at birth.)

DD3 is now 4 months, 12 lbs 4oz and 25 3/4" (that's 10th for weight and 90th for length). She was 8 lbs 9oz and 21.5" at birth. She's in 3-6 month clothes mostly. Some clothes fit differently though. I just bought a size 3-6 months swimming suit from Oshkosh, and it's way too small.

And like Nicole said, it might not even be that warm. We were in the Daytona Beach/Orlando area in January a few years ago, and we wore mostly pants with short sleeves. It was too cold to swim at the beach or outdoors.

I'd probably buy 6-9 month for any one-piece outfits (swimming suits/onesies/onesie dresses).

  • My LO was 8lbs 8oz at birth and currently wears 9 month size clothing at 4 1/2 months. Like others said, it's difficult to tell. Plus I think when you buy clearance items, most stores will tell you that the sales are final, so no returning them. The other factor is the weather. I live in South Florida. You're assuming it's going to be warm, but it could already be too cold to go swimming outdoors. If you can get some really good prices and don't mind a few bucks going to waste, I'd buy a few pieces in 6-9 month size, including a bathing suit, but I wouldn't go overboard. Also, I think you could always find swimsuits on line no matter the season, like on amazon.com.

  • At 5 months, your DD will most likely fit in either size 3-6/6month stuff or size 6-9/9 month stuff. FYI, you will not be able to return anything that you buy on clearance 5 months from now. If you find something cheap enough that you are willing to buy it in two sizes, knowing that you won't use one of those sizes and it will just go to waste, go for it.

To add to this, I'd leave the tags on and sell what you don't use in a B/S/T group in your area or consign it. If you're getting cheap clearance at Old Navy/Target/Crazy 8, etc, it might not be a big deal.

  • I'm pretty sure you can return anything to Kohls or Carters at any time.

  • FWIW, DS can fit Walmart shirts for 12 months old
  • My DD was in size 3-6 month clothing until seven months.  She will be 1 in August and wears mostly 6-9 months, but some 9-12 months.
I have custody of a six month old niece.  She is in 6-9 months.  She was bigger than DD at birth by nearly 2 pounds.  My sister tends to have bigger kids, and mine tend to be smaller.
  • My 4 month old, 5 months in 9 days, is just moving from 0-3 months into 3-6 months.

  • Mine was born at 8lb 5oz and is 5 months. She can still fit in some 3 months, but is starting to get into 6 months clothes. She is sorta in between sizes at the moment.
  • My DD is almost 5 months and still wearing 0-3 months.  My DS also runs on the small size (3 years old, wearing 24 month pants). The nice thing about summer clothes is that there is some leeway.  You don't have to worry about pants or shirts being too short. If you buy from Kohls or Carters, there is no limit on when you can return items.  Just keep your receipt.

  • Mine was 9 lbs 5 oz 20 1/2 inches long at birth. Lost a pound in hospital, at her 4 month apt (4 1/2 months really) she was 18 lbs 4 oz 26 inches. She is 5 months now and wears 9 month sundresses or dresses, and 12 month pants/shorts t shirts. She wears the baby gap 6-12 month bathing suit pretty well. Weal shave a 12 month bikini( diff brand) and it is a little tight ( she's a chunkier). She's EBF and gained pretty fast the first few months but has reflux and was eating all the time so I think that's why. I would go with maybe 9-12 month depending on how fast she gains.
