I need help! Re: sleeping

Cooper - who turned 3 today - is not sleeping lately. I mean in his room all night. He comes down at least once but usually 2-4 times per night. It's so hard on me and I know he needs to sleep too. We took his binky about a month ago, he is potty trained (at night also for 2 months) and in a full size big boy bed. I know all of this is prob contributing to his not staying in bed, but how long will it last?? He says he will and then doesn't. And he will say he needs to potty bc he knows that we will come up to help him even if he doesn't need to go. I need help big time! Tia ladies :)

  • Do you think it's developmental or a growth spurt? Whenever the boys stop sleeping, it's typically one of those things. Have you tried a gate at his door. We have done that for a long time to reinforce staying in bed if they wake up early but it might help him understand that he needs to go back to bed. Is he going back to sleep easily once you get him?

  • Yeah.., he will go back to sleep. And sometimes he doesn't leave but stays there and cries until we come up. One time I found him crying in his closet.
  • I believe we had a sleep disruption phase with Gavin around the 3 yr mark.  It took about a month for him to get over it.  I remember it b/c it was right around when Sophie was born and I was a complete zombie.  Also, we still have a baby gate on Sophie's room.  Only just took Gavin's down a few months ago.  I know some people are against them but I swear, it has made our lives so much easier.  May be hard to introduce it at this point though?  Right now, we are struggling with Sophie going to sleep.  She will lay up there for an hour+ talking, singing, playing, etc.  Then she's cranky in the morning.  She has 2 lights in her room- one is the projector light show on her sound machine and the other one is the Rainforest Crib Soother thing.  The last few nights we have told her that if she doesn't go to sleep, we will turn off her lights.  So far it's helping.  She's only awake for about 30 min after bedtime now.

  • We lock E in her room (i.e. there is a knob cover on the inside of her door, which she still can't operate) to avoid this problem.  Her room is upstairs and ours is on the main floor, so we feel like it is much safer for her to be locked in her room than having run of the house when we are asleep.  Maybe you could try that?
