HI! im new here, and was hoping for some knowledge on what to look forward to? what is the normal order that they suggest tests? (i am 35) are they painful? im just anxious to hear what they will be doing or asking me to do soon....thanks so much for your help in advance. i just havent gotten the same answer from people, and most people dont want to talk about it. lol!

  • It really depends on the issues you're having.  How long have you been trying?  Do you have any kind of diagnosis or opinion from your ob?  I think some pretty common tests before they'll do anything are bloodwork, u/s, HSG and SA for your DH.  I already had my diagnosis before I went to my RE, so there wasn't anything they needed to do other than more bloodwork and a new u/s.

Welcome @H-townbride.  Congratulations on taking the first step.  You'll see from my siggy that I'm not much further along in the process than you are.

For me, my first appointment was just a conversation and medical history (I go to Shady Grove).  Essentially, I told my RE everything that I had meticulously documented in the pre-appt paperwork.  They also took my vitals, I met with my assigned nurse, and the financial person for the office.  I was there close to 90 minutes.

Because of where I was in my cycle, I was able to come in 3 days later for blood work and a transvaginal ultrasound (which was not a big deal at all even though it will be the 3rd day of your cycle).  My husband had already had an SA.  We both needed the infectious disease panel and I was checked for my immunity levels (measles, chickenpox, etc).  I had to have my most recent GYN visit info faxed over.

Probably the most dreaded part for most people is the HSG.  I had so much fear about this and mine was literally no worse than a pap.  People do have a wide range of experiences though.

You can google the site and hear a variety of perspectives.  I have trouble with the search feature on here.  I always use google (for example: HSG site:thebump.com).

Good luck and keep us updated.

  • Your doctor will probably start with blood work and an ultrasound on CD3. It's also likely that they'll send your husband for a semen analysis. Depending on those results, the next step is the HSG. For most people, it's not too painful but everyone is different. Those are the main things that need to be done before you consider treatment options and the treatments your doctor recommends will depend on those results.

I'm sorry that you have to be here. Good luck getting everything started!

  • Thank you guys for being so suportive. Its really awesome. just kinda nervous about everything ya know? i guess i shouldnt be, but am =(

  • Sorry you have to be here, but welcome.  I've found that since I've been here, my anxiety has gone down a little bit.  You're spot on when you said "no one wants to talk about it" but here, everyone talks about everything!  It helps a lot, so stay involved!

My experience was this: I saw my OB after 12 months of trying, she ordered some bloodwork and and HSG.  She also sent DH to a urologist who did bloodwork, a testicular ultrasound, and an SA on him. When my DH's results came back fine and my bloodwork came back normal and the HSG showed a blocked tube, my OB said she couldn't do anything else for me and sent me to an RE.

When I finally saw the RE, she asked me a bunch of questions I had already answered on the forms (which really ticked me off), asked me about DH's results, then set me up for 2 rounds of monitoring, just to see what was going on.  That entailed CD3 ultrasound and bloodwork, CD13 or 14 ultrasound and bloodwork, then 7DPO bloodwork.  We did that for 2 cycles, then she started me on meds and recommended a tubal cannulation.  We didn't really make a "plan" like the other ladies here seem to have, which is why I'm meeting with my new RE (same office) next week.  I would say that if you have no previous bloodwork or ovarian/uterine ultrasounds or an HSG, you will have quite a bit of testing to do before you get to the treatment part.

Best of luck and get ready to open your schedule, open your legs, and relinquish any shred of dignity you may possess.  Sorry for the crassness, but it's true.
