Parenting after a Loss

More eating issues

Thanks for all the recommendations/advice yesterday!  Now we are having a new problem.

DS seems to have caught a stomach bug or eaten something that upset his stomach.  Yesterday he had diarrhea 4 times and ate virtually nothing all day.  Our nanny said he was pretty much only eating his fruit and some crackers.  He had a ton to drink though so lots of wet diapers.  Last night at dinner he wouldn't even eat his fruit and ate like 1 or 2 crackers.

We have been offering lots of pedialyte which he has been enjoying thoroughly, but he still won't eat anything.  Obviously he's got an upset stomach, but is there anything I can do?  He won't take plain noodles, toast or any of the things you offer for upset stomach.  So far all he has eaten today are a couple of Cheerios and some blueberries.  I know when an adult has an upset stomach you would offer toast, plain noodles, crackers and things to keep up their strength, but you can't explain to a 15 month old that he has to eat because he needs to keep his strength up and he will feel worse if his stomach is empty.  He just spits it all out.  Do I just wait it out and let him start to feel better?  At what point do I call the doctor and say, Hey, he won't eat anything?  Still having plenty of wet diapers so dehydration is not an issue.

TIA!!!

Re: More eating issues

  • DD had an intestinal viral thing at 13 mos. Tons of diarrhea that smelled like rotten eggs and vomiting. Pedi said to try BRAT if LO can keep food down, but if not, just to keep them hydrated with pedialyte. She probably went close to 48 hours on nothing but pedialye, water, and a half a slice of bread.

I'd call the pedi just to see if they want to get him checked out.

I hope DS starts to feel better.

  • Thanks, I just called and they said to keep an eye on him and keep him hydrated and to offer things that will solidify his poop, like rice, banana, etc.  Other than that if he's hydrated, doesn't have a fever, and is happy, not much I can do but let it pass they said.  Sigh.  He's already such a skinny mini!

This.  DS had a tummy bug (and he is a lousy eater to begin with) and it was hard to have him not eat much of anything for a couple days but he bounced back.  We had good luck with freezing bananas and smooshing them like "ice cream" (he normally eats coconut milk ice cream) and getting him to have a few bites of that.

Good luck and hope your LO is on the mend soon!
