Which layer goes on top?

I've just started CD on my 2 year old today. Excited!! But am still trying to figure it all out. I have hemp, bamboo & microfiber inserts and also unbleached cotton prefolds. I have been putting in 2 inserts and/or prefolds under a cover, but don't know what combo is best. I know that some are more absorbant and others, but don't know what that means for how to layer them? Which should be closest to her skin? Thanks!!

Re: Which layer goes on top?

  • Cotton and microfiber will absorb faster than bamboo and hemp. Hemp will be the most absorbent, then bamboo, cotton and microfiber in that order. The only one that should NOT touch her skin is microfiber. It's actually too drying to be next to bare skin for very long, and it can cause irritation and rashes. You might consider getting some fleece liners to put on top of the microfiber (your microfiber may actually already have a fleece side. if they do, that's fine to put next to her skin). Ideally, you would have your fastest absorbing materials (microfiber or cotton) closest to her, then put your bamboo or hemp underneath that.
