Diaper Rash

I apologize if this has been discussed.  Still getting used to the new working full time, taking care of the baby while my husband works out of town schedule has kept me from checking the board often.  Ever since we started solids about a month and a half ago we have had a diaper rash problem.  Every time DD poops her little bottom gets really red.  I've been putting desitin on her after every poop which helps a lot, if I don't do it after every poop or if I miss spots she will get a rash so bad that she cries and screams when I wipe her the next time. I was wondering if any one else knew of something else to do? Should I call the doctor about this?

Re: Diaper Rash

  • I have heard that oatmeal baths calm the rash. I use coconut oil on my baby's bum. It is amazing in my opinion. I am not a fan of desitin..even plain old Vaseline works better for their bums.

  • I would put coconut oil on all the time not just after pooping, it helps act as a barrier to keep the poop from sticking to the butt. I would also make sure that it's redness from poop vs. redness as an allergic reaction to some food item.
  • We use Desitin max strength after every poop change. She hasn't had a rash since we started using it

  • I don't think it's a reaction because it happens every time not just after one food. I need to try coconut oil. Thanks ladies

  • I would call the Dr, just to make sure.  We use Aquafor and it works wonders.  The one time she had a rash that the Aquafor wouldn't clear up, we used generic Lotrimin first and then slathered her with the Aquafor.  That worked wonders.  I never talked with my doc about it with her, but I did with my oldest.  Also, had a pediatric dermatologist tell me that was exactly what I should do.

  • I honestly do not like desitin. I like triple paste it works wonders, the redness could also be from teething, make sure you dry his bottom well you don want to have any moisture, then apply the cream.

  • dd just had the WORST diaper rash...from all her crazy sharting that she's been doing...she would cry every time we changed her...we were using desitin, but it wasn't getting that much better...i decided to use aquaphor instead last night, and at every change since then, and this morning it is so much better...she has a few bright red spots, but the whole area looks so much better...so glad we switched and that we had an extra tube to send to daycare today

  • I too would check with the doctor to see what they say.  It would worry me that it could be a reaction to the food.  Could also be something else like teething, but something is definitely going on.  You also want to make sure it's not something like yeast causing the rash.

I'm a big fan of coconut oil, especially to protect the skin, but should clear up the rash as well.
  • go figure....not too long after i posted this the day care called about her diaper rash and how it got worse....now open sores that stung with the aquaphor....and now here i am at the drs
