How is "waiting it out" going?

A little while ago there was a thread about waiting it out when LO gets fussy to see if they can soothe themselves or if it turns into full-blown crying that needs your help.
How is it going?

DD is getting the hang of it at night, and will sometimes fuss for a few minutes before falling asleep if she doesn't go straight out. During the day it's a lost cause though.

Re: How is "waiting it out" going?

  • DD is a sleep fighter so the only time I don't jump up when she's fussy is when I put her down for the night. I don't think she ha much ability to self soothe yet.

Same here! My little guy fights sleep all the time, so it's hard to let him cry it out.

  • I tried letting him cry for five minutes, and he went the full five. And, by the time I went in, he was so worked up, it was actually harder to get him down. I'm all for this, but just not when they are so young.

This is the same for my DD. She cries more and harder when she is tired than when she is hungry. It is so heartbreaking a lot. At night, I will let her move around and make noise but the moment she starts even borderline crying I go in there. Otherwise it takes twice as long to get her back to sleep anyway.

  • It works if she can see lights. I turn on a nightlight or her projector and then pick her up and she just stares in wonder. Then I lay her back down and she stays!
  • My pedi told me it's too early to let the baby cry it out. SHe said 3-4 months is a time when we can start to try it out. I don't let my LO cry for more than 5 min.
  • My LO sleeps right next to me so I hear when he starts to whine or grunt ready to eat. I usually feed him before he cries because if I let him get all worked up I have to take more time to calm him before he eats. I won't try this again until he is older. Although I sometimes worry that I am getting him up so often at night he won't learn to sleep through the night! I hope not

5 minutes is actually longer than you would do for CIO at first even at several months old.  The recommended starting age is 6 months, and you start with 3 minutes at a time (Ferber's method).

  • gotcha. sorry

  • I have been waiting it out from early on and it truly works. Our baby is an awesome sleeper. I don't let her get to the crying point but there are times when she can literally grunt and move around for an hour and it kills me not to get up but she's really learned to self soathe

  • Waiting it out is going well. I will put him down, clean and fed, and he may cry for 5 min or less but then fall asleep. If it is anymore than that I will get him and rock him and put him back down.
