Mine is.  She can't read yet.  She knows her name, and all her letters, and probably a few sight words (ie, Mommy, Daddy) that she writes.  I feel like she's so close if she would just start to sound things out but it's like she just can't be bothered.  So much easier to just guess or ask someone.

DD is starting full day kindy in 2 weeks.  Reading is her strong area (but has poor fine motor skills).  She is reading level 2 books on her own (the I Can Read Books and others like them).

I have a 2nd grader that could not read going into k and a son going into k this fall that cannot read yet. All kids develop differently, and personally I Woukd not worry. My 2nd grader can read now. While he did struggle in 1st but that was because of an eye syndrome. He did fantastic with his sight words in k! And had an extremely helpful reading specialist that was able to help him!

My DD is starting half-day kindy in the fall. She's reading level 2 readers. Her pre-k teacher said a few of the other kids in her class were reading by the end of the year, too, but lots still weren't.

DD1 knew a few sight words going into kindergarten (mostly names of her preschool friends, Mommy, Daddy). By the end of kinder she was reading Dr Seus books, and by the end of 1st grade she was reading chapter books.

DS is starting full day kindy in September. He knows a LOT of sight words: numbers, colors, animals, opposites, prepositions, and first words. He can handle basic readers on his own.

A lot. Reading is a strength of hers, and she has been devouring books all summer. She can read Henry-and-Mudge level books by herself. They use the Magic Treehouse books at her kindergarten and I think she'll be able to tackle those with very little help.

Writing and social skills are another matter, but she is gung-ho about reading.

Yes he can, (about 2nd grade level) but it is not normal. His future kindergarten teacher said it is likely some kids finish kindergarten without being able to and it is no big deal. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
