Dry Morning Diaper?

Normally DS's morning diaper is HEAVY. Last night he went down late because we were out- 10 PM rather than 7 (he was asleep in the carseat on our drive home), so he had one extra diaper change and didn't nurse afterwards. When I changed him this morning at 7:30, his diaper was barely heavier than the new one I was holding! Is this a cause for concern? Should I be giving water along with his solids (pretty minimal at this point, 1-2 oz at around 5 PM)?

Re: Dry Morning Diaper?

  • I would make sure he's still getting about the same amount of milk as before, solids shouldn't really replace milk at this point. I probably wouldn't worry if it only happens once.

  • The only recent change has been STTN, but that's been a few weeks now. Would love for him to wake up from his nap so I can check his diaper!
  • I remember someone posting about this a while back and their doctor said it happens sometimes and there's nothing to worry about.  Maybe they'll see the post and weigh in.
  • Good luck, I know on particularly hot and/or fussy days there have been instances where I've changed DDs diaper and it been too dry for my liking. I usually just paused what ever I'd planned on doing so I could BF her, if he's FF I might offer just a couple ounces of water because you also don't want to force overfeed. Since DD's EBF, sometimes when she's really fussy she won't eat as well so I just have to offer more often.

Also if you BF make sure you're staying extra hydrated. I noticed like 1.5 weeks ago DD was being really fussy & had some dry diapers and it dawned on me that I hadn't been drinking enough water - it's like crazy hot here! That night I noticed my boobs were super full again and she ate a ton
  • DD will have a dry diaper every once in a while when she wakes up (it has happened 3 or 4 times). Usually shortly after she wakes up or during her first nap, she let's go and has a HUGE diaper. She has a normal amount of wet diapers during the day before and after, so I really haven't been worried.

  • Thanks. He's BF, so upping my water intake is a great idea! His diaper wasn't so full after his nap, but pee smelled and looked normal. When I pump I get around 5 ounces, so I'm hoping my supply is good, but never hurts to be vigilant about drinking.
  • It happens over here sometimes as well. I find if he doesn't sleep very well his diaper will be dryer. Sometimes a hour after he wakes up he has a super wet diaper. I'm hoping this just means he will be easy to potty train.
