So, I bought G a birthday card and told SO to write something in it, something G would be able to read when he was older, and he wrote this (let me start off by saying SO is pretty unemotional about this kind of stuff and usually says "that's stupid" or "he'll never look at it," or something to that effect, usual guy stuff):

Hey Buddy,

This is your dad, the guy you're named after. Happy birthday. I can't believe you're already an entire year old. Feels like yesterday I witnessed you being born. That was one of the best days of my life. Holding you for the first time made me realize how precious life really is. You're the best thing that has ever happened to us. We've done a lot of growing up along side of you this year. I've decided that there is nothing more important than you. Everything I do, I do it with you in mind. You seem to be a very happy baby. Seeing you smile is the best part of my day. Your laugh could turn the saddest frown upside down. I hope your mom and I get to share many more birthdays with you. Remember to be kind to others, respect everyone you meet, have patience, and listen to people when they speak. One day, you will realize how important these things are and maybe you'll even get to share them with your son/daughter. Until then, enjoy your life, don't let the small stuff stress you out. I love you son, happy birthday.

Crying all over the paper, I wrote this:

My beautiful boy,

Happy birthday. I cannot believe that you're one. We've had such an amazing year with you and you have taught us so much about life. There is so much to learn in life and so many experiences to be had. I hope that whatever you want to be, no matter what it is or what other people say or do, that you do it; fearlessly and with all you have. Know that no matter what, your dad and I will always be here, together, to support you. I hope that you allow God to fill your heart with love and compassion for other people. I hope that you grow to be a selfless,honest, and caring man. Have faith in people...and most importantly, in love.
